Child and adolescent mental health

The Priory Group has been helping to treat children and adolescents with a wide range of mental health issues for many years. Young people require a specialist treatment approach which is why many of our Priory hospitals have a number of Specialist Child and Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrists working with them, ensuring that each patient receives the most appropriate treatment plan designed specifically for them.

The Priory helps to treat all aspects of child and adolescent mental health including:

  • Anxiety
  • Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD)
  • Behavioural and conduct disorders
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Phobias
  • Psychosis
  • Self harm
  • Trauma

Treatment options

All Priory child and adolescent units are staffed by experienced, dedicated teams of multi-disciplinary mental healthcare professionals who have the expertise and experience to successfully treat young people's problems. Although treatment is normally provided on an inpatient basis, each patient's therapeutic programme varies depending on the level and nature of care required, making more flexible programme structures involving day care or outpatient treatment available to our adolescent patients.

A wide range of group and individual therapies are provided including successful, evidence-based talking therapies like cognitive behaviour therapy, dialectic behaviour therapy and psychodynamic therapy.

School-age patients can continue their education in hospital and, where appropriate, we liaise with their schools to assist their reintegration following treatment.

In addition to the Child and Adolescent Units, the Priory also have access to dedicated High Dependency Units for under 18s who may not be suitable for a general acute child and adolescent ward but do not require the need for a secure hospital.
