What is oppositional defiance disorder?
Oppositional defiance disorder describes an ongoing pattern of incredibly hostile, disobedient behaviour in children towards authority figures, which goes above and beyond the bounds of acceptability.
Diagnosing oppositional defiance disorder
The behaviour will affect and interfere with all factors of the child's life, for example, their capabilities at school and social interaction at home and with peers
The behaviour will not stem from any other mental health problem, such as depression or anxiety
The problems will be experienced for at least six months
Symptoms of oppositional defiance disorder
Children with oppositional defiance disorder will show a pattern of negative and defiant behaviour over a prolonged period of time. Symptoms to be aware of include:
- Quickly loses temper
- Argumentative with adults and authority figures
- Deviates from instructions or requests
- Deliberately annoys people
- Lack of accountability for actions
- Angry
- Resentful
- Spiteful
- Vindictive
