Coxlease School - Case Study Y

YF arrived at Coxlease in July 2008 with a severe attachment disorder manifested by an extreme difficulty with the managing of interpersonal relationships and an associated difficulty regulating his own behaviour. He had an incomplete grasp of social rules and relationships, breaching these social rules with inappropriate questions and gestures and physical contact. His emotional difficulties interfered with his academic progress.

During his time at Coxlease it was evident that YF showed progression not only in his class but also in his ability to manage his emotions and behaviour and would comply with adults requests. Relationships with staff began to form and this was paramount in YF succeeding in education and in his care base. With YF beginning to form relationships and show an ability to control his behaviour and concentration, his National Curriculum levels began to rise and he showed that he was a bright, intellectual young person with the capability of taking in and learning what was being taught to him.

YF’s progression both educationally and socially continued throughout each year group engaging more in lessons, communicating maturely with staff, and interacting well with his peer group. His continuing development as a young person was a testament to YF’s hard work and the hard work and support of the Coxlease staff around him. Reintegration into a mainstream school was a well earned reward and YF was very keen to make it work.

YF transferred to Bay House School in Gosport in November 2010 and reports received from the school show that he has settled in very well and is being as successful as we expected him to be, remaining ‘motivated’, ‘enthusiastic’ and ‘contributing to class discussions’.

We are YF’s parents and in our opinion the 2 years YF has spent at Coxlease has changed him into the child we always hoped he would be.  It is now so gratifying to see him interact with his peers as well as any 14 year old in his school.  We have been amazed at the progress he made in his relatively short time at Coxlease.  The staff have been nothing short of amazing and given him the confidence and skills to take him forward and become a more social, rounded teenager who has suddenly taken pride in who he is.  His new school reports him as enthusiastic, hard working and a popular class member who has fitted into his new surroundings faster than they could have hoped for.  We will always be in debt to Coxlease for turning his life around and given his parents back the son we have always wished for.
