Sheridan School Education
The strength of Sheridan School is a highly trained, dedicated team who passionately believe in developing academic achievement and social and communication skills to increase the confidence, independence and organisational skills of all students.
Education is an integral part of the therapeutic process with each young person being helped to experience success.
Sheridan School's curriculum is designed to meet the outcomes defined in Every Child Matters, enabling all students to become:
- Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
- Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy, fulfilling lives
- Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society and are well prepared for life and work
Our broad and balanced curriculum is centred on the National Curriculum and is adapted for each group of learners to ensure that they are able to access learning depending on individual need. Every student has an individual education plan (IEP) which takes into account their academic ability and defines individual goals for self-development and improvement. A broad range of subjects is catered for within a structured timetable. Our diverse teaching and management strategies, combined with a stimulating curriculum delivered in small class settings encourage students to fully contribute in lessons and gain the confidence to succeed.
Sheridan School offers opportunities for students to gain qualifications, achieve new skills and develop new, confident attitudes to living and learning. We also readily access local mainstream colleges through partnership links to provide access to vocational and academic courses off site.
Students are encouraged to achieve success through a wide range of nationally recognised external accreditations including:
- GCSE examinations
- Entry level certificates
- CLAIT and AQA unit awards
Small teaching groups accommodate up to a maximum of six students of mixed abilities and gender and allow for a high level of support from experienced special needs teachers and learning support workers. The behaviour of students is continually assessed in class and managed through behaviour management systems underpinned by the education and care plans of each individual. All staff are trained in Team Teach 'positive handling' physical intervention techniques.
