Child & Adolescent Services

The Priory Hospital Chelmsford offers treatment for adolescents from aged 8-18 for outpatients and from aged 10-18 for inpatients. These include adolescents suffering from a wide range of mental health, emotional and behavioural problems such as depression, trauma, schizophrenia, anxiety, self-harm, conduct disorders and autistic spectrum disorders. Outpatient services for children aged 8-18 includes access to psychology and psychotherapy and is appropriate for those suffering from:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Oppositional conduct disorder
  • Dyslexia and dyspraxia
  • ADHD
  • Addictions
  • Autistic spectrum disorder
  • Aspergers
  • Onset personality disorders
  • Affective disorder
  • Mild and borderline learning difficulties
  • Early onset psychosis
  • Self- harming behaviour
  • Family difficulties
  • Family work ( Systemic approach) Consultants, Therapists, Nurses
  • Individual therapy (CBT, psychologist, psychotherapy, family therapy)
  • Group therapy
  • Psychological assessments from psychologist

The team provides parenting advice and liaises with schools and other professionals involved in the young person's care. Adolescent day patient package (up to 16 years).

  • Two hour compulsory assessment - child and parents
  • One hour psycho educational session - child and parents
  • Optional additional treatment session and evaluation session

Inpatient services are offered in a dedicated ward with en-suite single rooms and communal areas. The service offers inpatient and day patient care for the assessment and treatment of young people suffering from major mental health problems including eating disorders and for those requiring treatment under the Mental Health Act 1983, from as young as 10 years. Education is also provided by the unit's own school and team of teachers.

Who is the service for?

Young people aged 10-18 who need access to an inpatient facility, particularly adolescents who:

  • Are in acute phase of a mental illness or eating disorder
  • Cannot be cared for in a community setting
  • Need a period of stabilisation, assessment and treatment before possible onward referral to another unit or school
