The Priory Hospital Middleton St George - The Sandalwood Programme - Adult female borderline personality disorder service

The Sandalwood Programme is a specialist service designed specifically to address the complex problems of people with severe BPD. The service is led by a Clinical Psychologist and a psychological approach is central to all assessments and interventions.

The programme offers psychological interventions which have an evidence base with this patient group such as schema therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) as recommended by NICE guidelines. Our DBT offers the four core areas of DBT which are necessary to meet the international standards of a DBT service. We have a full multidisciplinary team and offer a comprehensive range of therapeutic group work in addition to individual work.

Our therapeutic services include:

• Psychology
• Occupational therapy
• Health and fitness
• Art

These services are fully integrated with the nursing and medical staff and this ensures that all interventions are offered within a consistent and cohesive framework which is essential when working with people with a diagnosis of BPD.

All the staff working in the programme will have received at least a foundation level training in the main aspects of BPD as recommended by the ‘Knowledge and Understanding Framework for Personality Disorder’. In addition, some staff will have received a higher level training and will actively be involved in facilitating DBT skills with the patients and supporting other therapeutic work thus ensuring the therapeutic milieu of the programme.
