Referrals and admission

Admission criteria

Our service users are males and females aged 18 years and over who may:

  • Have a history of a complex mental health disorder, including schizophrenia or other psychosis
  • Have a co-existing personality disorder, borderline learning disability, substance misuse problem or other secondary issues
  • Have significant forensic history
  • Be stepping down (depending on service this may be from medium secure, low secure, PICU, acute or rehab service)
  • Have been a victim of past abuse
  • Have proven ‘difficult to treat’ on a community basis in the past
  • Have been repeatedly admitted and discharged previously
  • Be detained under the Mental Health Act, including Home Office restriction orders
  • Have failed to move on from another care setting such as medium or low secure
  • Have completed intensive rehabilitation and require a mid-way step between this and living independently in the community (Elmswood step-down service)
  • Be specially agreed as requiring longer term rehabilitation in a more protective environment in order to participate in the community and not withstanding marked vulnerability to relapse (Mayfield)

Referrals

The clinical team will assess patients, at their place of origin, within 48 hours and schedule a timely admission if appropriate. Patients are given a full medical and metal health assessment, including their medication regime as well as social and educational needs, during the first two week following admission.

Funding must be approved by the purchasing authority prior to admission. There is no charge levied for the initial pre-admission assessment or desk-top review that leads to an admission. Additionally there is a clear pricing structure meaning no hidden costs or surprises.
