Farleigh College Care
Farleigh College provides residential care through its range of living units in which we aim to provide students with the highest standards of care in a safe, predictable and stimulating environment. All students are allocated a pastoral tutor, whose primary task is to ensure the happiness and well being of individuals in their care. Pastoral tutors assist the class teacher and consultant psychologist through drawing up an individual education plan (IEP) which highlights strengths and weaknesses, and sets realistic targets. This is done by focusing on the areas of need as identified in student’s statements and reviews.
Farleigh College Mells is aware of the difficulties that students can experience when away from home and tries to ensure that the environment is warm, secure and understanding. There is a large care staff team that, with tutors, endeavours to maintain links with home and share in keeping families up to date and involved in what happens at school. We aim to understand the individual needs of our students and ensure that leisure time is enjoyable, offering every student opportunities to develop new skills and face new challenges.
Within our waking curriculum, our students are provided with individualised goals that are matched to their individual needs. With their own efforts and the support and guidance of staff, students are able to positively achieve their goals during their time with us.
The school medical officer is available for scheduled appointments for pupils when the need arises. There are both male and female doctors available and parents are always notified if a child is unwell or needs medication. Additionally there are ten qualified first aiders, and almost all of the staff have received initial first aid training.
The catering team provides a varied lunchtime selection of both hot and cold dishes and evening meals. There is an emphasis on providing a healthy well-balanced diet that includes the maximum use of home produced foods. Specialised dietary needs are accommodated for with both meat and vegetarian options and special diets such as diabetic and gluten or dairy free can also be catered for.
Farleigh College Mells receives regular ‘welfare inspections,’ which we welcome as part of continually improving the quality of care we provide. We produce detailed assessments of our students at the admission stage and throughout their time at the school. These reports are based upon the 5 key underlying principles of Every Child Matters:
- Being healthy
- Staying safe
- Enjoying and achieving
- Economic well-being and
- Making a positive contribution
