Rugeley Horizon Education

Students are encouraged to learn through an active approach to learning with the focus on developing physical fitness, body co-ordination and emotional stability. The educational curriculum is divided into three main areas:

  • Physical education
  • Expressive arts
  • Academics

Physical education is the cornerstone of the curriculum with students participating in regular periods of physical activity throughout the day. By participating in physical activity, students are able to disperse excess energy and develop the mental and physical composure needed to access the whole curriculum. The curriculum is specifically designed to target the child's development in five global areas: communication, attention, co-operation, self-awareness and sensory response.

The whole atmosphere at Rugeley Horizon School is one of assurance and confidence where students efforts are privately and publicly acknowledged. Frequent praise is given and negative behaviours are addressed constructively. The methods used by the school focus on the 'here and now' and helping young people to develop skills and coping strategies for their future.

Access to the National Curriculum is at an individually appropriate level with specialist teaching available for art, music, drama and physical education. The 14 to 19 curriculum includes accredited award programmes including ASDAN, AQA and OCR entry level, vocational studies and access to local college courses and work experience.
