Slade Guitarist Unveils Wednesfield Care Home Dementia Unit

Date: 16/11/2009

Residents and staff at Bentley Court Care Home in Wednesfield, part of the Priory Group, were delighted when Slade guitarist Dave Hill recently paid them a visit to officially unveil the new name of the home's dementia unit - Slade Avenue.

The new purpose built care home opened its door in August, to provide specialist nursing and dementia care services for 77 residents.

Dave Hill, who grew up in Wolverhampton before finding fame as the guitarist in rock band Slade, was delighted to meet residents, staff, friends and family to celebrate the naming of the dementia unit.

To mark the occasion, the home on Nordley Road held a special Autumn Bazaar where visitors were treated to family games, food and music, including face painting, bric-a-brac stalls, a tombola, charity raffle and a competition to guess the number of balloons in a limousine.

Bentley Court's dementia floor utilises the very latest research in dementia care focussing on each person's individual abilities. Dementia-signposting assists with orientation and a reminiscence room is available, for residents to spend time enjoying music, hobbies and games.

Debbie Rowley, Bentley Court care home manager, said: "The residents and staff really enjoyed meeting Dave Hill. He's a local legend. We are delighted to name the dementia unit Slade Avenue, as the band have such strong links to the local community here in Wolverhampton.

"We are very proud of the dementia care we provide at Bentley Court. It is so important for those with dementia that hobbies and interests that they once enjoyed at home can be continued when in our care, so we encourage residents to bring items from home and to continue living their lives as normally as possible."

Sharon Butler, Managing Director of Priory Group Care Homes Division, said: "Dementia can be a very distressing disease and at Bentley Court we aim to provide all our residents with a living environment designed to give them the greatest levels of privacy, dignity and stimulation, utilising the very latest treatments and techniques.

"The aging population means that the number of people with dementia is likely to increase and high quality specialist care provision is vital to ensure the wellbeing of our older people is maintained."

Bentley Court is one of the first cares homes to be opened by The Priory Group, as the company moves in to the provision of care for older people sector. The company now plans to rapidly increase its portfolio of care homes with further new builds now planned for England and Northern Ireland.
