New alcohol related brain damage unit for Priory Glasgow
The Priory Hospital Glasgow, part of the Priory Group, the leading independent providers of mental health care in Europe, has launched a brand new unit aimed at tackling alcohol related brain damage (ARBD) in Scotland.
The ARBD unit offers specialist neuro-rehabilitation services providing intensive assessment and integrated care programmes. Patients with multiple diagnoses and complex needs resulting from organic, degenerative or neurological problems as a consequence of alcohol-related brain damage will be able to engage in programmes in a safe, age appropriate environment. The 10 single en-suite rooms are specially equipped to deal with the complex needs of ARBD patients.
Michael Steel, clinical services manager at the Priory Hospital Glasgow said: "Having worked in the addictions field for many years I have seen ARBD become a more prevalent, but often under reported illness.
"This new unit will support the current ARBD treatment services in Scotland. Our aim is to help patients gain increased levels of independence and achieve progressive goals for the future."
The unit will receive clinical support from Dr Pramod Jauhar, a consultant psychiatrist with experience in ARBD treatment, along with a multi-disciplinary team of specially trained nurses and therapists.
Referrals will be accepted from the NHS, general practice and the independent and voluntary sector. The unit will offer pre-admission assessments for all referrals within 48 hours and a comprehensive treatment report with recommendations within five working days.
Open days will be held on May 11 and 13 and will run from 9.30am to 4pm offering health professionals the opportunity to find out more about the services provided and the specially adapted accommodation available to patients. The unit is expected to start accepting patients from Monday, May 18, 2009.
