Priory Group Funds Major New Depression Report
The Priory Group is funding a major report into depression, impairment and disability. The report, commissioned jointly by the Depression Alliance and RADAR (the Royal Association for Disability Rights) will look at what makes depression different from other mental health problems and seek to find the best ways to support people with depression in and out of the work environment.
The report to be launched in Depression Week, April 2010 will ask, for example, do people with long term depression find it helpful to be considered as disabled under the current Disability Discrimination Act? How can people with depression keep their jobs even if they are unwell once or twice a year?
Despite the fact that over 12.8 million working days a year are lost through depressive illness - most people with depression actively want to work and there is evidence to show that work can help them to recover. So how can employers best be supported to recruit people with a history of depression and help them to continue to contribute to their organisation.
The report will draw on the evidence, expertise and personal experience of a wide range of experts in depression, disability and employment including:
- Chris Thompson, chief medical officer for the Priory Group
- Liz Sayce, chief executive of the Royal Association of Disability Rights
- Emer O'Neill, chief executive of the Depression Alliance
There is also input from researchers, GPs, employers and occupational health specialists.
Vitally, we will include interviews with people who have experienced depression themselves and had positive and/or negative experiences at work as a result of it.
