About us

We are the largest independent provider of mental healthspecialist care and specialist education services in the United Kingdom by number of beds, focusing on the provision of acute psychiatrysecure and rehabilitation services, complex carespecialist education and elderly care, and one of the top three independent providers of secure and rehabilitation services in the United Kingdom by number of beds.

On 14 April 2011 we acquired the Craegmoor Group which consisted of 3,618 available beds; as of 30 June 2011, we had 266 facilities and 7,121 available beds (6,902 excluding supported living rental beds) located throughout the United Kingdom.

We focus on complex patients and pupils, with mostly non-discretionary health care and educational needs (i.e. having long-term material consequences if not treated). Our skilled, multi-disciplinary teams of consultant psychiatrists, doctors, nurses and professional carers assess each patient’s and pupil’s needs and develop a tailored therapeutic or educational programme to allow patients and pupils to move along the care pathway and meet their treatment goals.

Individual care pathways are constantly reviewed and therapeutic care and medical inputs adapted to ensure that treatment is relevant and appropriate and, where possible, to enable patients to either return to the community or take a suitable long-term placement. We offer programmes which integrate education, care and therapy services that are tailored according to individual needs. Access to a wide range of therapies is available, including psychiatry, psychology, speech and language therapy, counselling, anger management counselling, psychotherapy and occupational therapy.

History

The Priory Hospital Roehampton is London's longest established independent psychiatric hospital and has been in continuous operation since its launch in 1872 by Dr. William Wood, a psychiatrist of great distinction at a time when there were no specific treatments for severe mental illness.

The Priory Group was created in 1980 with the purchase of the Priory Hospital, Roehampton by an American healthcare company. Over the following decades the Group acquired more hospitals and diversified its services into acute psychiatry, addictions, secure mental health care, specialist complex care and rehabiltation. In 1993 the Priory Group moved into specialist education services with the purchase of Jacques Hall Foundation, then an adolescent therapeutic community, in Manningtree, Essex.

In 2000 Priory was acquired by Westminster Health Care Group, which merged the business with its existing mental health facilities to form the Priory Group. In 2002, Doughty Hanson backed the management buyout of the Priory Group. In July 2005, Priory was sold to ABN AMRO, which was acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland in 2007. Over the course of 2008, Philip Scott and Jason Lock joined us as CEO and CFO respectively. Prior to joining us, they held the same positions at Southern Cross. Our Care homes for the elderly division was established in May 2009. In March 2010, we acquired the Affinity Group to expand our facility base and increase our range of care offerings. In January 2011 we were acquired by Advent International.
