Accessing our services and funding

We are able to help individuals with eating disorders from age 12 upwards and have a team of consultants, nurses, therapists and educational staff dedicated to helping patients just like you at one of our 16 sites across the UK.

Step 1

In order for us to help treat your eating disorder effectively we ask for a referral letter from your GP, your current consultant psychiatrist or the local NHS eating disorders team/ CMHT (Community Mental Health Team). If you have any queries about the referral letter or you are in crisis please call us on 0845 2 PRIORY (0845 2 774679) and we will endeavour to help you immediately.

Step 2

The next step on your road to recovery is to have an initial assessment with one of our consultant psychiatrists (or your NHS consultant) who will be able to assess your current health and wellbeing and to talk with you to help identify the issues that need addressing. (An assessment is not needed with an emergency admission.)

Step 3

Following the assessment, your Priory consultant will be able to recommend an appropriate treatment plan based on your particular needs.  The length and type of treatment plan will depend on the nature and severity of your eating disorder.  For example, this could range from a weekly outpatient appointment with a consultant, or attendance on our flexible daycare programme, to a more intensive and structured approach as an inpatient at one of our hospitals for those who require it.  Feel free to call us to discuss your individual circumstances.
Your patients/relatives (where relevant) and the funding body who is paying for your treatment (if it is not yourself) will also be advised of the recommended treatment plan and the associated costs.

Funding

Patients choose to fund their treatment at Priory in a number of ways:

Private medical insurance

Priory hospitals are recognised by all major private medical insurers. You should check your policy or a family member's policy to see if your insurance covers psychiatric care, particularly the treatment of eating disorders.

NHS funding

Many Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and Health Boards fund eating disorders treatment through specialist referrals. Check with your GP to determine what the situation is in your area.

Self-funding

Some patients and their families pay for their treatment themselves; payment arrangements should be made with your hospital prior to admission.
