Assessment process

  • All foster carers have to be assessed by a specialist social worker

  • When the assessment has been completed, both the foster carer and the social worker attend an independent review panel to gain approval as a professional foster carer. Individuals who are new to fostering may think this sounds intimidating, although most of our prospective carers find this both a rewarding and positive experience and support is provided at every step along the way.

  • Typically foster carers will receive eight to 10 visits during the assessment process and the whole assessment process may take up to six months

  • During the assessment Priory Fostering Services must undertake a variety of checks and references including an enhanced criminal records bureau (CRB) check and a full medical check. Prospective carers also have to attend a three day weekend 'Skills to Foster' training course which forms part of the overall assessment

  • Once approval is confirmed, Priory Fostering Services will then seek the right foster children for the right foster carer and foster carer's family. Priory Fostering Services always allow carers to make the final decision on the foster placement
