What causes an addiction?

The reward one receives from a pleasurable action is called ‘positive reinforcement’. People drink, for example, to feel good, confident and relaxed. Alcohol and drugs are chemical substitutes for ‘natural reinforcers’ but more powerful and persistent. Continuous exposure to this can initiate increased drug seeking behaviour for example, and set the stage for addiction. If an addict stops their harmful behaviour, they get the opposite effect to reward and go into withdrawal.
