If you are suffering from an addiction, you will recognise the hugely damaging impact that it can have upon relationships, as well as your career and finances. Seeking help for your addiction can therefore be a difficult but rewarding first step on the road towards abstinence, rehabilitation and recovery.

What is an addiction?

Addiction is the repeated involvement with a substance or activity, despite the substantial harm it causes, because that involvement was (and may continue to be) pleasurable or valuable. Such substances and activities may include alcohol, drugs (e.g. cocaine addiction or heroin addiction), food, gambling, shopping or sex. An addiction can rapidly cause significant social, economic, health, and/or legal consequences.

We understand that embarking upon recovery can be a challenging time for you. With this in mind, Priory offers a free initial assessment at all of our addiction rehab facilities to help you to discuss your addiction in confidence.

What causes an addiction?

The reward that one receives from a pleasurable action is called ‘positive reinforcement’. People drink, for example, to feel good, confident and relaxed. Alcohol and drugs are chemical substitutes for ‘natural reinforcers’ but more powerful and persistent. Continuous exposure to this can initiate increased drug seeking behaviour and set the stage for addiction. If an addict stops their harmful behaviour, they get the opposite effect to reward and go into withdrawal.

Signs and symptoms of addictions

Symptoms of addiction can vary but if you're worried that you may have an addiction, you can look out for some of the following signs:

  • Changes in work attendance or performance
  • Mood swings, with temper outbursts

  • A defensive attitude
  • Frequent small accidents or mistakes
  • Paranoia or overreaction to criticism
  • Secretive or dishonest behaviour
