Priory psychiatrist wins Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Communicator of the Year Award

Psychiatrist Dr Owen Bowden-Jones has been named Psychiatrist Communicator of the Year 2015 by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

The London-based doctor, who works from Central North West London NHS Foundation, is also a leading psychiatrist at Priory’s Roehampton hospital in south-west London where he treats patients for a wide range of addictions.

The annual Royal College of Psychiatry Awards mark the highest level of achievement within psychiatry, and are designed to recognise and reward excellent practice in the field of mental health.

The RCP said he had pioneered approaches to engaging vulnerable groups, and had spoken about his work to schools, universities, nightclubs, music festivals, conferences and the United Nations.

He had also contributed widely to the media as clinical advisor to Public Health England, the Government’s advisory body.

His award was presented by Jeremy Laurance, writer on health issues and former health editor of The Independent.

The judges said:  “Dr Owen Bowden-Jones is a recognised expert in club drugs – so called ‘legal highs’. He has extensive experience of working with the media, providing authoritative and accessible information about many aspects of substance misuse.

“Owen has been creative in his work, using new technologies to communicate information about safer drug use.  He has also led the influential ‘Project NEPTUNE’, which provides guidance for clinicians on club drugs and novel psycho-active substances.”

There were 18 categories in the RCPsych Awards 2015 including medical student of the year, psychiatrist of the year and academic researcher of the year.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the professional medical body responsible for supporting psychiatrists throughout their careers, from training through to retirement, and in setting and raising standards of psychiatry in the United Kingdom.

It represents more than 15,000 psychiatrists in the UK and internationally.
