Mill Garth Hospital staff praised for their warmth, understanding and respect for patients

Mill Garth Hospital has been rated ‘good’ overall and in all care categories by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the health and social care watchdog.

In the report, following an inspection, inspectors said: "We observed positive interactions between staff and patients throughout our inspection. Genuine warmth, understanding and mutual respect were evident. We observed staff directly supporting patients in a calm, caring and reassuring manner… All the patients we spoke with were complimentary about the service and how they were cared for. Patients told us they felt safe and supported by staff."

Inspectors said, "All areas of the service were clean, well maintained and furnishings were good." They went on to say, "All care plans were comprehensive, person centred and up to date".

The hospital was described as having a 'comprehensive' multi-disciplinary team comprising a consultant psychiatrist, and an occupational therapy team.

The report mentions that the hospital has TV lounges, quiet rooms, activity rooms and an equipped gym. Patients take part in group activities including art and crafts, walking and gardening. Individuals are supported to access activities outside the hospital. The hospital holds community meetings every two weeks where patients can give their views and suggest ideas for any improvements. There are similar meetings held for their relatives and carers.

Shaun Wilkes, Hospital Director, said: "I am delighted with the outcome of this inspection and the report. It is pleasing that the staff have been praised highly as it is they who make a true difference to our patients' lives."

Gair Stott, Managing Director for the North and Scotland at Priory Healthcare and Partnerships in Care, said: "This is excellent news for Mill Garth Hospital. I am particularly pleased that the service received praise for its cohesive working and the way staff work together to deliver successful outcomes."
