Priory welcomes the Prime Minister's comments

The Priory Group welcomes the Government’s pledge to prioritise mental health, and help schools and business handle the 'hidden injustice' of mental illness.

We treat more than 20,000 patients a year for mental health issues. The Prime Minister Theresa May's initiative is a "promising intervention to make a real and lasting improvement to the lives of millions of people in the UK".

Dr Hayley van Zwanenberg, Priory Group Associate Medical Director, and Clinical Director of Priory's Wellbeing Centres, said: "I am really pleased to see mental health being a political priority under Theresa May, and particularly welcome her focus on mental health in schools and at work.

"Demand for our services at all levels is high. People with mental health problems, who often struggle on until they are at breaking point, deserve support when they need it, so any commitment to better identifying and helping them must be welcomed.

"Employers, particularly, could do a lot more, around not making workers feel ashamed or nervous about coming forward with conditions such as stress, depression, and coping with bereavement. At our network of Priory Wellbeing Centres, we see workplace stress, fuelled by job insecurity, long hours and significant workloads, causing significant health issues for thousands of people, and this has a devastating knock-on effect on those around them including their families.

"Schools are also reporting a stress epidemic. Some of this stress is absorbed by children from their parents, but much of it is fuelled by social media, contributing to issues like sexting, cyber-bullying, self-harming and eating disorders. When I talk to children in schools about stress, I am constantly amazed at their low self-esteem, and how few tools they feel they can resort to in order to cope with outside pressures which, by anyone's reckoning, are considerable. Early intervention for anyone with a mental health problem is vital and can be life-changing."

Priory is dedicated to helping people to improve their mental health and wellbeing, and currently treats more than 70 different conditions through a nationwide network of over 300 facilities that cater for a person's health, care, education and specialised needs and include:
