‘Time To Talk’: Mental Health Events in Worcestershire aim to dispel mental health myths

Episodes of poor mental health can affect people of all ages and from all backgrounds, sometimes without warning.

The social stigma attached to mental ill health and the discrimination people can experience can make their difficulties worse and make it harder to recover.

Priory will be supporting two local events in Worcestershire and the Midlands, each aiming to address common myths around mental health.

Reducing mental health stigma

Taking place on January 30 and February 1 in Bromsgrove and Redditch respectively, both “Time To Talk” events will work towards reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues including anxiety and depression.

A recent report has shown that incidences of depression in Worcestershire are higher than the rest of England, with increases on the previous year encouraging mental health campaigners to ensure mental health discussion is circulated as much as possible.

Part of the Time to Change social movement run by charities MIND and Rethink Mental Illness, each event will run in line with similar events across the country on February 1st in order to mark Time To Talk Day 2018.

For the past five years, Bromsgrove District Council’s Unison Branch Secretary, Laney Walsh, has been running these events for staff, with this being the inaugural year the event will be opening to the public.

Dr Hayley van Zwanenberg is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Priory’s Woodbourne Hospital in Edgbaston.

She says: ““We are really proud to be part of the local mental health community, offering support to patients and their families across the Midlands and providing treatment for addictions and mental health issues such as workplace stress, depression, anxiety, OCD, and Borderline Personality Disorder.’

“This event represents something we are passionate about at Priory – that it's always good to talk.”
