Childbirth is a potent trigger for episodes of psychiatric illness. The vast majority are mood disorders, especially depression. Almost 50% of pregnancies are unplanned and as a result, potential pregnancy must be considered in all women of childbearing age before prescribing any medication.
Dr Natasha Bijlani will discuss the relationship of mood disorders and childbirth, the general principles to be considered in prescribing antidepressants in pregnancy and breastfeeding and also outline how to discuss the risks of these medications with women and their partners.
