Dr Rien Klijnsma (Consultant Psychiatrist) and Sheree Irwin (DBT Therapist)
During this educational evening, we will be discussing how Dialectal Behavioural Therapy (DBT) based interventions can support patients who are exhibiting behaviours that might include:
- Suicidal acts
- Mood swings
- Impulsive behaviours such as substance abuse, spending, binge eating or engaging in unsafe sex
We are seeing that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) provides a short-term fix but that it is not ticking all the boxes for patients that have this kind of ongoing problems. Dr Rien Klijnsma and Sheree Irwin are keen to run a seminar to show the positive effects of DBT treatment.
They will share their knowledge and experience of working with people diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and other conditions that were once labelled as impossible to treat. Rien and Sheree will give examples where six months of treatment allowed individuals the chance to turn their lives around using learnt skills.
The talk will cover aspects of treatment such as: the background of DBT, diagnosis criteria, skills based therapeutic modules and positive empowerment for patients. Our speakers have a great deal of experience and throughout the emphasis will be on how this knowledge can support your concerns as GPs.
