The Priory Chadwick Lodge

The Priory Chadwick Lodge is a 52-bed medium and low secure unit providing specialist treatment programmes for male and female patients who have been detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) and have a history of offending behaviour.

The unit consists of, 44 beds for men in four single gender wards (30 medium secure and 14 low secure) and eight beds for women in one single gender ward (medium secure)

The hospital is renowned for its sex offender treatment, its interventions for personality disordered patients and its forensic addictions treatment programmes. In addition, we offer tailored care to those patients who present with a dual diagnosis of mental illness/personality disorder and mild learning disability.

We also specialise in remand patients, patients transferred from prison and those with a history of serious offending.

What we treat

The Priory Chadwick Lodge offers a broad spectrum of evidence-based therapeutic interventions, involving patients at every stage. The hospital's consultant-led, multidisciplinary team has a wealth of clinical and research experience in forensic psychiatry, particularly sex offenders.

All programmes are designed to reduce the risk of re-offending and to maximise the potential and enhance the quality of life of each patient.

We treat:

  • Patients with mental illness and acute complex needs, including patients transferred from prison or with a history of serious offending
  • Patients with personality disorder and mental illness who require long-term specialist rehabilitation
  • Patients with a dual diagnosis of mental illness/personality disorder and mild learning disability
  • Patients with personality disorder without mental illness who will benefit from a specialist, multi-disciplinary approach
  • The assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of mentally ill or personality disordered individuals and / or illicit substance misuse

The locked service provides a 12 month recovery focused programme with Dialectical Behavioural Therapy at its therapeutic centre. The skills taught within the DBT programme promote greater self awareness, and will also teach the individual to build resilience while managing overwhelming situations more effectively.

Quality and regulation

You can be assured that the treatment patients receive will be of the highest standard, as we are continually monitored by the independent regulator (Care Quality Commission) and are bench-marked against the National Service Framework.

Referrals

We accept referrals from a wide variety of public sector organisations throughout the UK, including special hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, prisons, courts, MSUs, SHA forensic lead commissioners, social services, NHS Mental Health Trusts, GPs, the police and others.

Our secure patients are aged 18 or over (some wards have higher restrictions) and are detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) or have equivalent status. Our patients are made aware of hospital procedures, regulations and restrictions and should agree to abide by them via a written contract prior to admission.

We are able to accept emergency referrals (24/7). Urgent or out-of-hours appointments and admissions can be arranged immediately by telephoning the appropriate hospital.

We are also able to offer a National Rapid Transfer and Advisory Service (NRTS) for remand and convicted prisoners who are in need of urgent admission, assessment and treatment for mental disorder in condition of low or medium security. This service is cost free.

Each referral is assessed on an individual basis in a speedy manner and consideration is then given as how to best manage the particular patient's needs.

For further information, please contact the Admissions office on 01908 593 009 or e-mail: chadwicklodge@priorygroup.com

The Admissions Office then passes the patient's details on to the appropriate consultant psychiatrist.

Treatment and care

The hospital's consultant-led, highly specialist multidisciplinary team has a wealth of clinical and research experience and offers a collaborative, therapeutic approach to rehabilitation through specific evidence-based treatments tailored to individual patient needs. Our team includes staff from a variety of disciplines in the hospital, including nursing, medical, occupational therapy, social work and psychology. Careplans therefore reflect this multidisciplinary approach as we strive to meet the needs of our patients in a holistic manner.

Our specialist treatment programmes include:

Sex Offender Treatment

For patients with a history of sex offending behaviour. This involves both individual and group work based on cognitive behavioural therapy with a strong emphasis on relapse prevention.

Forensic Addiction Programme

Designed specifically to address the tripartite problems of mental illness/disorder, substance abuse and offending behaviour within one dedicated setting.

Personality Disorder Programme

For patients presenting dissocial, narcissistic, paranoid or borderline personality disorders which would result in abnormally aggressive or seriously irresponsible behaviour. The aim of the treatment programme is to address patients' deficits to enable them to lead a more pro-social lifestyle for the future, as well as reducing their level of risk to themselves and others.

Care pathway

The Priory Chadwick Lodge forms part of the care pathway for Chadwick Lodge and Eaglestone View. We offer a comprehensive care progression plan for our patients which encourages a step down programme from medium to low secure and through to complex care and rehabilitation.
