Grafton Manor

Grafton Manor provides highly specialised neuro-behavioural rehabilitation for men and women aged 18 years and older, with an acquired brain injury, including traumatic brain injury and strokes. The rehabilitation programme at Grafton Manor is particularly aimed at helping people who have experienced cognitive, behavioural and emotional changes as a consequence of brain injury to ensure they can access all areas of rehabilitation.

The site, set in a quiet village in peaceful countryside, includes an attractive, historic and purpose-fitted cottage called The Chantry, a flat and a studio flat. We also have two community houses situated in Kingsley just outside of Northampton. The split consists of:

  • Grafton Manor - 13 beds
  • The Chantry - 5 beds
  • Cottage, Flat and Studio flat - 3 beds
  • Community Houses in Kingsley - 6 beds

This established care pathway of 27 beds enables people with acquired brain injury to maximise their independence at any stage of their post-acute recovery journey.

Our approach

In 1985, Grafton Manor was established as the UK's first neurobehavioural rehabilitation service to be established in a community setting, beyond the confines of a large psychiatric hospital campus. Our programme is Psychology led and our clinicians are at the forefront of research and development in this field, with many award-winning treatment innovations and excellent patient outcomes.

We provide individualised rehabilitation programmes using evidence-based methods with known value, employing time-lined goals to support the resident to achieve optimum rehabilitation and reach their full potential. This aims to support successful, sustainable discharge. The programme is delivered by an expert Transdiciplinary Team (TDT) which ensures consistency of approach and rehabilitation 24/7, not just in timetabled sessions, helping to ensure learning and consolidation of new skills that will sustain following discharge.

The main emphasis of the rehabilitation programme offered at Grafton Manor is to maximise individual choice, autonomy, and empowerment, and for users of the service to obtain their optimum level of independence. Progress is recorded using valid outcome measures and results have clearly demonstrated the benefits of the programme.

As residents progress, they have the opportunity to step down and carry on their rehabilitation in other parts of the care pathway, including the community houses.

Our expert TDT consists of:

  • Clinical and Neuro-psychologists
  • Neuropsychiatrists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Speech and Language Therapists
  • Dietician
  • Nurses
  • Rehabilitation Assistants
  • Domestic and Support Staff
