We also specialise in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), a treatment which utilises the idea that the mind can heal itself naturally, particularly during sleep. In addition to its use for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, EMDR has been successfully used to treat:
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Sleep patterns
- Complicated grief
- Pain relief, phantom limb pain
- Self-esteem and performance anxiety
Southampton’s Psychotherapist and Counsellor Angela Marston has successfully used EMDR for many clients, ranging from single traumas to more ingrained OCD and anxiety type symptoms. The validity and reliability of EMDR has been established by rigorous research. It is one of the few treatments recommended by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
EMDR can be brief-focused treatment or part of a longer psychotherapy programme. Depending on the severity of the condition, anything from 6-18 sessions could be required.
EMDR case study
A young man who had been involved in a collision whilst using public transport who was still experiencing fear and anger over two years later. He could no longer attend college and could not leave the house without being accompanied; equally he could no longer sit in his bedroom on his own and listen to music as he had done before the incident. After 8 sessions of EMDR he was able to go out and meet up with friends, his anger and fear had diminished and he was planning to either return to college or get a job. He was no longer stuck in fear by the events of the accident – EMDR has allowed him to process the accident and move forward with his life.
