The Ayr Clinic is made up of a well-established 36-bedded low secure hospital, and an eight-bedded specialised step-down facility for men and women with mental illness and/or personality disorder. The Ayr Clinic is situated in the coastal town of Ayr in West Central Scotland.

Patients who will benefit from low secure services at Ayr Clinic include:

  • People who require specialist safety management and rehabilitation

Our low secure service is configured over three wards, comprising of a 12-bedded male and a 12-bedded female admission ward as well as a 12-bedded mixed gender rehabilitation unit.

Our specialised female step-down service at Ayr Clinic's annex, The Gatehouse, enables patients to continue their recovery journey, maintain good mental health, and promote social inclusion and skills for a sustainable discharge into community living.

Patients are supported by a highly skilled, experienced and trained team of clinicians and healthcare professionals working with patients in an environment of hope, positive regard and empowerment.

Our approach

We provide high levels of therapeutic care that is underpinned by evidence-based knowledge, delivered by a highly experienced team. Our individualised and group treatment programmes have clearly defined goals and outcomes for our patient group.

Treatment is offered in a safe and positive environment where patients develop their skills for independence, self-confidence and knowledge of how to manage their mental health and wellbeing. We work collaboratively with the residents to empower them, using recovery and person-centred approaches.

Our treatment programmes focus on therapies including:

  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) programmes
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) informed input
  • Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) informed interventions
  • Emotional regulation
  • Self-harming reduction and management
  • Trauma, grief and loss counselling
  • Psycho-education
  • Anger and anxiety management
  • Problem solving skills
  • Relapse prevention
  • Life and social skills

Our team is comprised of the following key roles:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Psychologists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Nursing team including a primary nurse
  • Healthcare assistants

In addition, we are backed by a committed, experienced support services team who ensure that the hospital is both welcoming and well-run.

Finally we view patients as part of our team, working together to build the confidence and skills to re-join a meaningful place in the community.
