The Priory Hospital Romiley

The Priory Hospital Romiley, in Cheshire, is a locked rehabilitation and recovery service for women with complex mental health needs. Our main aim is to empower our patients to begin managing their own risk and recovery and gain independence.

We help women with a variety of presenting conditions including post-traumatic-stress disorder (PTSD), self-harm, treatment resistant psychosis, emotionally unstable personality disorder (borderline type), and personality disorder as a co-morbidity.

The hospital is a 10-bedded unit located in a residential area of Stockport and offers a robust multidisciplinary programme of care with seamless access into lower or higher intensity treatment, reflecting the patient’s changing needs as they progress towards recovery.

Our approach

We use a recovery-based model of care which recognises the seven principles of recovery – hope, a secure base, a sense of self, supportive relationships, empowerment and inclusion, coping strategies and purpose.

Our service is patient centred, comprehensive and collaborative and focuses on achieving realistic goals and ensuring an effective pathway to the community.

Our structured programme of group psychotherapy includes acceptance-based treatment methods such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), which are evidence-based for personality disorder and mental health disorders.

Psychological therapy groups address:

  • Mental health awareness
  • Risk management
  • Goal setting
  • Recovery
  • Relapse prevention
  • Transition to the community
