Set back within 15 acres of landscaped gardens, the tranquil environment of the Priory Hospital Southampton offers therapeutic and recovery focused residential treatment as well as day care and outpatient services. The hospital also provides a specialist inpatient service for children and adolescents.

The hospital opened in 1987 and has established an excellent reputation for providing the highest standards of care, for people suffering from mild to moderate mental health issues, such as stress and anxiety or people looking for speacialist addiction treatment.  The hospital provides a range of outpatient based therapy services such as individual and group based cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

Personalised evidence based treatment programmes are delivered alongside the use of a range of therapies, as well as an art room and communal lounges. All en suite bedrooms are private, and a dining room is provided for service users and their guests.

Priory has a highly experienced team of mental health professionals and support staff, which include consultant psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and therapists.

Acute mental health treatment

Our staff team has the expertise and experience to treat most psychiatric conditions. These include depression, anxiety,post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive states (OCD), schizophrenia and all major acute psychiatric illnesses.

Addiction treatment programme

The service specialises in addiction treatment for substance and behavioural dependency, such as alcohol addiction, drug addiction (inlcuding illegal drugs such as cocaine, cannabis, heroin), gambling addiction, relationships and shopping addiction.

The priory has many years experience in treating individuals to help them beat their alcoholism or dependency on drugs.

Eating disorders treatment unit

The eating disorder service provides effective programmes for the successful treatment of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and other related conditions. The specially developed eating disorders programme focuses on the psychological, social, behavioural and physical sides of the illness.

We offer free assessments and free telephone advice to GPs for eating disorder patients between 9.00 am - 5.00 pm.

  • Naso-gastric and PEG feeding facilitated, when required
  • Specialist therapy programmes offered include body image workshops and assertiveness therapy

Child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS)

The Priory Hospital Southampton has a separate CAMHS unit:

Kingfisher Ward is a ten bedded general adolescent ward. The department is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Quality Network for Inpatient CAMHS (QNIC)

  • Suitable for young people aged 12 to 18
  • Free pre-admission assessment coordinated alongside the young person, their family or carer and external referring bodies and healthcare professionals
  • Ten private en suite bedrooms
  • Specialist therapy programmes offered include cognitive behaviour and family therapy
  • Education delivered by skilled teaching staff, with onsite assessment and examination facilities
  • Clearly structured cost frameworks available for commissioners and referring healthcare professionals

Referral and admissions

The majority of referrals made to a Priory hospital are through a patient's GP.  A referral can be made by telephone, in writing, via email or via fax to the hospital's admission department, who will then pass these details on to the relevant consultant.

To make an outpatient appointment with a specific consultant, please telephone reception on 023 8084 0044, who will transfer you to the relevant secretary.

The Priory Hospital Southampton (Marchwood previously) Child and Adolescent Unit (CAMHS)

The Priory Hospital Southampton has a separate CAMHS unit:

Kingfisher – ten bedded general adolescent ward

The unit has a dedicated multi-disciplinary team as well as access to the hospital school and education services.

The multi-disciplinary team includes:

  • Consultant psychiatrist
  • Systemic family therapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Teaching staff
  • Experienced nursing team
  • Social worker
  • Psychology and educational psychology
  • Therapy including psychotherapy, counselling, CBT, CAT and trauma work including EMDR
  • Creative therapies including creative expression, art and dance therapy.

The General Adolescent Unit:

Works with a wide range of presenting concerns including young people with:

  • Eating Disorders
  • Depression
  • Self harming behaviours
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders
  • Fatigue syndromes
  • Trauma - related conditions
  • Addictions

For young people with Eating Disorders:

The Adolescent Unit works in conjunction with the adult Eating Disorders Service and has access to specialist treatments including motivational interview, multiple family group therapy and naso-gastric feeding when required.

Environment and facilities

The environment we create for patients is as important as the treatment, itself. To this end, each patient has the privacy of his or her own comfortable bedroom, with television, telephone, and en-suite facilities. Patients are encouraged to have their meals in the main dining room, which offers an excellent choice of dishes. Special dietary requirements can also be catered for. Patients also have access to the on-site gym, and extensive grounds.
