The Priory Hospital Thornford Park provides personalised assessment and treatment programmes for males with complex care needs, histories of offending and those who may have failed in previous placements. The combination of medium secure and low secure units and rehabilitation flats provides a seamless internal care pathway supporting and empowering patients in their recovery and rehabilitation. The facility offers:

• 58 low secure beds in three wards

• 38 medium secure beds (including Seclusion Suite) in three wards

• 10 enhanced low secure beds for patients who require assessment and treatment in a highly structured and safe environment

• 17 low secure beds for patients who are elderly/physically frail

• 10 bedded Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit

• Rehabilitation flats with rooms for eight patients to live with greater independence prior to discharge

Multidisciplinary teams work collaboratively with the service user and commissioners to deliver personalised treatment programmes and adaptable care pathways for patients to progress towards the least restrictive setting and to independence. Our service users are among the most vulnerable members of society and require sensitive therapeutic interventions delivered in a healing environment that encourages self-awareness, knowledge and empowerment. We offer services for:

  • Patients with personality disorder
  • Mental illness / complex needs

New PICU provision

The Priory Hospital Thornford Park has just opened the 'Crookham Unit' - a new, 10-bed purpose-built Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The unit has been designed and built with a focus on integrating current best practice in both environmental performance and clinical care, in order to deliver a bespoke therapeutic environment.

Referrals & Admissions

Thornford Park Hospital Referrals

We accept referrals from a wide variety of public sector organisations throughout the UK, including special hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, prisons, courts, MSUs, SHA forensic lead commissioners, social services, NHS Mental Health Trusts, GPs, the police and others.

Our secure patients are aged 18 or over (some wards have higher restrictions) and are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.

We are able to accept emergency referrals (24/7). Urgent or out-of-hours appointments and admissions can be arranged immediately by telephoning the appropriate hospital.

We are also able to offer a National Rapid Transfer and Advisory Service (NRTS) for remand and convicted prisoners who are in need of urgent admission, assessment and treatment for mental disorder in conditions of low or medium security.

  • Service users may have forensic or substance misuse history
  • Detained under the Mental Health Act (1983)

Treatment and care

We provide bespoke therapeutic interventions for a wide range of mental health needs including:

• Sexual offending

• Personality disorder

• Deliberate self harm

• Behaviours that challenge

• Substance misuse

• Management of Psychosis

The hospital's consultant led multidisciplinary teams have a wealth of clinical and research experience in general and forensic psychiatry, enabling patients to benefit from a broad range of individual and group therapies. They services offered include:

  • a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment of risk using structured risk management systems including HoNOS secure, START, HCR-20 and RSVP
  • a comprehensive psychological needs assessment including full psychological risk assessment,psychosexual and neuropsychological assessments
  • the Care Programme Approach (CPA) begins within three months of admission and thereafter on a six monthly basis
  • continuity of care offered across the whole care pathway from medium to low secure through to complex care and rehabilitation
  • promotion of independence and social inclusion, including recreation, education and employment through partnership working with community based organisations and facilities
  • a well established service user involvement programme that places the individual at the centre of their care and promotes opportunities to shape the ongoing development of the service
  • the “My Shared Pathway“ approach has recently been adopted in the treatment of all service users, offering the individual the opportunity to be fully involved in their care. This ensures that the CPA is phrased in a language they understand and they are fully involved in their own risk assessments
