Local mental health hospital rated as good across the board

  • Staff are “caring and compassionate”
  • Hospital “provides a range of activities and facilities to meet patients’ needs”
  • Child and adolescent ward offers art therapy and group sessions on body image, nutrition and self-care

A local mental health hospital, The Priory Hospital Altrincham, has been rated as ‘good’ across the board.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), the health and social care regulator, judged the hospital to be ‘good’ overall and in all five categories it is assessed in: “are services safe”, “effective”, “caring”, “responsive” and “well led”.

Inspectors said patients regard staff as being “caring and compassionate”.

In their review of acute wards for adults of working age, inspectors said: “Patients told us staff were caring in their approach and provided help and support when they needed it.”

Inspectors observed staff being “caring and respectful” towards patients on the hospital’s child and adolescent mental health ward. The inspectors went on to say, “Families and carers told us staff were compassionate and discreet when they provided support and were responsive to the needs of the young people.”

The report said all wards provided “a range of activities and facilities to meet patients’ needs. Facilities were available to ensure safe child visiting arrangements were in place and cultural and religious needs were met”,

In their review of acute wards for adults of working age, inspectors said: “A choice of therapeutic activities was available on both wards. Some patients who attended group activities told us they were therapeutic and had helped them learn skills to lead a healthier lifestyle.”

The report mentions how patients on the child and adolescent mental health ward can get involved in art therapy, and take part in groups on nutrition, body image and self-care.

The Priory Hospital Altrincham treats patients who require treatment for addictions, depression, anxiety, stress and eating disorders. It is located in Rappox Road, Hale. The hospital is operated by the Priory Group, which specialises in mental healthcare and runs mental health hospitals and Wellbeing Centres across the UK.

Mark Haslam, Hospital Director, said: “I am pleased that our staff have got so much praise for being caring and supportive to patients. It was great that much of this feedback came from our patients. I thank everyone involved with the hospital for their efforts.”

Paul Pritchard, Managing Director for the North region of Priory Healthcare, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark and everyone else who works alongside him at The Priory Hospital Altrincham for everything they have done to make it an excellent service.”
