Dr Alan Wear is a General Adult Psychiatrist at the Priory Hospital Southampton. He graduated from the Royal Free Hospital in London. He trained as a general practitioner, working for a time in Australia. While working as a general practitioner he became interested in psychological aspects of physical illness and went on to train as a psychiatrist. He trained in Oxford, where he was a research fellow and later in Southampton. His research included general practice contract with the chronically mentally ill in the community.
In 1994, he was appointed as a Consultant Psychiatrist at St James Hospital, Portsmouth where he was the Consultant responsible for Eating Disorders. He has worked at the Priory Hospital Southampton since 1997, where his interests include somatoform disorders, mental health of adults in relation to care proceedings and eating disorders.
