Dr Az Hakeem completed his undergraduate medical training at University College London and then trained in Psychiatry at The Royal Free Hospital, The Tavistock and Portman Clinics and West London Mental Health. In addition to training in Psychiatry he has also completed training as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist at The Tavistock and Portman Clinics, Mentalisation Based Therapy at The Anna Freud Centre and as a Group Analystat The Institute of Group Analysis. He has worked as a consultant in both Psychiatry and Psychotherapy throughout his consultant career. Prior to joining the Priory Roehampton he worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry, Psychotherapy & Forensic Psychotherapy at Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust and The Portman Clinic where he had worked for 12 years. In 2012 he completed a 12 month working sabbatical in Sydney, Australia.
Dr Az Hakeem has worked extensively as a Consultant Psychiatrist to the media and has appeared on a number of television programmes. He has had a regular segment on GMTV, Big Brother on the Couch, been a co-presenter on Wife Swap the Aftermath, and during 2012 had a weekly segment on Weekend Sunrise, Australia’s biggest breakfast TV show. He has published extensively in psychiatric and psychotherapeutic journals and has previously had a regular column in Red Magazine.
Dr Az Hakeem has a special interest in Medical Psychotherapy where he offers a combined approach of psychotherapy and psychiatric medication management where appropriate.
Dr Az Hakeem is a world specialist in the assessment and psychotherapeutic treatment of disorders of sex/ gender identity /sexuality and has researched and published widely in this area.
Az Hakeem has recently been appointed as Visiting Professor in Psychiatry and Applied Psychotherapy by The University of Bradford.
