Dr Hamilton McBrien undertook his postgraduate training in Psychiatry within Trinity College, Dublin before completing his specialist training in Child & Adolescent Mental Health through Kings College, London as part of South London & Maudsley NHS Mental Health Trust.
He published an article about the use of ADHD treatments and Learning Disability. His first Consultant position was as a CAMHS Consultant within Barnet, Enfield & Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust, leading an Adolescent Outreach Service in Haringey which cared for severely mentally unwell teenagers in the community as an alternative to hospital admission. He then began private practice as Medical Director & Lead CAMHS Consultant within Oakview Hospital, St Mary's Cray, Kent. This was a secure site providing care to very severely mentally unwell teenagers with associated high risk behaviour within an inpatient setting.
Dr McBrien moved to the Priory in 2010 to become Medical Director & Lead CAMHS Consultant with the North London Priory Hospital, participating at both a Senior Management & Clinical level to ensure high standards of medical care are provided across all services within the hospital. He leads the young person's inpatient service within the hospital. Dr McBrien subsequently took on the role of Priory CAMHS Group Medical Director in 2011, with additional responsibilities for the quality of clinical care & service developments across all Priory CAMHS sites. As part of his commitment to the training of future medical staff, he undertakes tutorials in CAMHS for medical students from the Royal Free Hospital, London, on placement within the North London Priory Hospital.
He is additionally a trained Dialectical Behavioural Therapist with an interest in self harm behaviour. His interests also include adolescent psychopharmacology and medicolegal aspects of psychiatric care.
