Dr Gowrisunkur has been a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Priory Hospital, Altrincham since 2001. She has been a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists since 1986 and she is a U.K.C.P. registered Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist.

Dr Gowrisunkur trained in Medicine at the University of Manchester and went on to do her further training in Psychiatry based at the University Hospital of South Manchester where she also attended the MSc in Psychiatry course. She completed a two year research programme in Psychological Aspects of Cancer at the Christie Hospital. She carried out her Specialist Registrar Training at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and also completed her Diploma in Psychotherapy at the North West Institute of Dynamic Psychotherapy.
Dr Gowrisunkur was a Research Fellow for a year and carried out research in perinatal psychiatry. She was later involved in setting up a large research project study in the impact of cancer on Mental Health at the Christie Hospital.
She has also studied the interaction of ethnicity and access to Psychological Therapies. She was also involved in key change processes involving Mental Health Services at Tameside General Hospital and for Pennine Care. She took the lead in setting up a treatment model and care pathway for patients with complex mental health needs. She provided extensive supervision and consultation services to the Mental Health Teams and to other professionals working with Pennine Care Mental Health Service.
Dr Gowrisunkur has been the Chair of the North West Institute of Dynamic Psychotherapy. She was also the Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee working with approximately 60 other Consultants at Tameside General Hospital. At the Priory Hospital, Altrincham, she has a key position working with psychological therapy services and was involved in the improvement of Psychological Therapy services and setting up treatment and care pathways in this area.

Special areas of interest and clinical approach
As well as managing common mental health disorders such as Depression, Anxiety and Bi-Polar Mood Disorders, Dr Gowrisunkur has specialist expertise in the assessment and treatment of women’s health, perinatal mental health issues, the interface of physical and mental health issues, complex post traumatic states and relationship issues.
Dr Gowrisunkur focuses on an individual’s life-experiences as well as their symptoms and her treatment plan is based on a comprehensive assessment of psychological, physical and social aspects of each person’s life history and the ways in which they interact to create current difficulties. Her approach is a collaborative one with each person and their knowledge of themselves and their experiences being at the heart of the process. She likes to ensure that everyone is actively listened to and heard and attempts to offer an affirmative and yet pragmatic approach in order to enable her patients to understand their experiences past and present, to overcome difficulties with the help of medication and/or psychotherapy as required so as to live the best life they can.
