Dr Kirsty Smedley is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who has worked in adolescent inpatient services for over 17 years. She is currently working as the Psychology Lead at the Young People’s Services based at The Priory Hospital Cheadle Royal. Prior to this she worked in the Adolescent Forensic Service in Manchester for 10 years, including developing and providing an in-reach clinical psychology service for adolescents at HMYOI Hindley. Kirsty was the clinical supervisor for a University of Manchester pilot study aimed at delivering CBT to young offenders in secure units and prisons. She also has a background in working with looked after young people in residential care and foster placements. Kirsty has a specialist interest in working psychologically with young people with psychosis. She is currently working clinically on an Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, with young people who demonstrate high levels of risk to themselves and/or others with complex co-morbid presentations including, psychosis, autistic spectrum conditions and emerging personality difficulties. She is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Manchester and was a member of the Guideline Development Group for the NICE guidance on psychosis & schizophrenia in children and young people.
Kirsty works in a highly collaborative manner to engage young people experiencing distress. This involves comprehensive assessment and psychological formulation before drawing on an eclectic range of models and approaches to inform an individually tailored treatment package. She mainly uses third wave cognitive behavioural therapies (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy or ACT, Mindfulness).
