Dr Serfaty was born and educated in London. Between 1978-1982, he studied BSc (Hons) in Medical Science at St Andrews University, Scotland and achieved a merit-distinction in every exam taken. Between 1982 and 1985 he undertook his clinical training (MBChB) at the University of Manchester. Between 1986 and 1987 he was Lecturer in Anatomy at Manchester University and became so interested in the structure and functioning of the human mind that he decided to pursue a career in Psychiatry in 1987 and therefore has over 20 years of experience in mental health. Between 1987 and 1988 he was a Registrar on the Rotational Psychiatry training at Edinburgh University. At this stage he also developed an interest in research and undertook a Masters of Philosophy degree in Psychiatry, investigating death and overdose by benzodiazepines.
In 1991 he was appointed as a Lecturer in Psychiatry in Newcastle upon Tyne. He also received his cognitive therapy training at the Newcastle Cognitive therapy centre and achieved a distinction. He gained specialist experience in affective disorders, neuropsychiatry, eating disorders, drugs and alcohol. Dr Serfaty was appointed as a full time Senior Lecturer in 1996 at University College Medical School.. He has led and collaborated in a number of research projects in order to expand medical research.
He completed a medical doctorate (MD) in 2006 in which he developed a specialist interest in the use of melatonin for sleep disorders in depression and dementia. His current research interests include the use of CBT in older people with depression, CBT for people with distress and cancer, CBT for the treatment of BDD and CBT for eating disorders. He is Clinical tutor for the UCL Medical School and has a diploma in teaching (FHEA) and also lead consultant for day therapy services at the Priory Hospital North London.
