Conditions treated

Dr Ramplin qualified as a doctor in 1995, working initially in general medicine at Hartlepool General Hospital and then Darlington Memorial hospital. After a career break (in which he qualified and worked as a chef), he began training in psychiatry in 2005, gaining experience in various services in and around Newcastle, including the Regional Affective Disorders Service. He became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2008, subsequently completing higher specialist training in forensic psychiatry, also in the north east. During this period he gained broad experience across all types of secure hospitals and prison based mental health services.

He has worked as a consultant since 2011, initially in an NHS low secure service, providing consultant care for both men and women with severe mental illness and personality disorder. He was instrumental in removing restrictive practices in low secure inpatient care in that service. Simultaneously, he provided mental health input to a high secure prison, working with some of the most challenging mentally ill and personality disordered offenders in the UK.

Dr Ramplin has an interest in philosophy of psychiatry, achieving an MA in Philosophy of Mental Health (with distinction) in 2012. This provides a sound ethical underpinning for his practice. He co-edits the Royal College of Psychiatrist’s Philosophy Special Interest Group newsletter, and has presented twice at the college’s Philosophy of Psychiatry conference, speaking about moral responsibility.
