At Priory, we recognise the urgent need to address racial disparities in mental health care, and we are committed to embedding anti-racism into every aspect of our service delivery.

The Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF), introduced by NHS England, is a mandatory framework aimed at reducing racial inequalities in mental health services by ensuring equitable access, experience and outcome (AEO) for all individuals from racialized communities who access our services.

Our commitment and strategic priorities

We acknowledge the historic and systemic inequalities within mental health care, as highlighted by the national Mental Health Act Review. PCREF aligns with our core values of patient-centred care, inclusivity, and continuous improvement. Our commitment to be an anti-racist organisation is demonstrated through:

  • Leadership and governance: establishing and monitoring concrete plans of action to reduce health inequalities
  • Data: establishing a data-set to identify where improvements in reducing health inequalities are required. We will also ensure this data is robust and able to be published as required
  • Feedback mechanisms: establish visible and effective ways for patients and carers to feedback, as well as clear processes to act and report on that feedback

Priory PCREF team

Over 20 people are regularly involved with PCREF implementation. This includes a mix of Priory colleagues, lived experienced partners (LEPs), carers and community members.

Key PCREF representatives are:

  • PCREF operational lead, Kevin Mafukidze who leads and supports Priory’s PCREF project, to develop and deliver against project plans, identifying key milestones and using data to inform of progress
  • Priory CEO, Rebekah Cresswell, serves as the executive sponsor of PCREF, ensuring that race equality remains strategic priority at the highest level of governance
  • Dr Olu Olasode as independent non-executive director

Priory PCREF steering group

  • Priory has an established PCREF steering Group which is chaired by PCREF key members. The steering group colleagues come with the skill level, competency and ambition to take the Priory PRECREF plan forward
  • The taskforce steering group have oversight of implementation/delivery of the operational plan, linked to embedding the principles of PCREF. They make recommendations on service changes and ensure the principles of coproduction are woven into the work, utilising the expertise of LEPs
  • The taskforce works towards engaging key stakeholders, developing terms of reference, and formulating appropriate actions bespoke to our organization
