We recognise that substance addictions, including alcohol and drug addictions, as well as broader behavioural addictions such as gambling, internet, love and sex and shopping addictions, can have a profoundly negative impact on all areas of your life, including your ability to function on a daily basis, your interpersonal relationships, performance at work, and your physical and psychological health.

At Priory, we ensure that you are placed at the heart of your addiction treatment journey so that you benefit from a truly bespoke package of care, in order to produce the best possible outcomes for you as an individual, and allow you to overcome your substance misuse or addictive behaviours.

How are addictions treated at Priory?

To ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible on your journey to recovery, we offer a free addiction assessment with one of our alcohol and drug rehab experts. This allows you to discuss your concerns in confidence, receive guidance on the next steps in the addiction treatment process, and begin to develop an understanding of the journey that you'll be taking towards rehabilitation and recovery.

You'll also have a consultation with a consultant psychiatrist, who will gather information on your medical and psychiatric history and advise on future treatment. We also offer a medically assisted detoxification process for your addiction, if this is needed.

Assessments can be done over the phone or in person, and usually last for approximately 90 minutes.

Our treatment programmes are delivered by a world class team of therapists, psychiatrists and psychologists at our network of UK hospital sites and wellbeing centres. Tailored to your needs, each programme can be scaled up or down depending on the level of support needed for your recovery.

Treatment programmes at Priory include:

Medically assisted detoxification

If you're struggling with an alcohol or drug addiction, an important first step in your addiction treatment journey may be a medically assisted withdrawal detoxification or ‘detox’, before you start addiction therapy.

Alcohol detox and drug detox can differ slightly, but detox involves removing all traces of addictive and harmful substances from your body, while managing withdrawal symptoms. The detox process at Priory typically lasts for 7 to 10 days and is delivered by our highly trained, multidisciplinary teams of consultants and other addiction specialists. Our detox experts also offer medical intervention and prescribe medication during detox, if needed, in order to ensure that you're physically stable, ready to start addiction therapy. You'll also benefit from 24-hour mental health nursing support for the duration of the detox process.

Inpatient (residential)

Our addiction treatment programmes typically take place as part of a 28-day residential programme, although the length of treatment can be flexible according to your unique needs, requirements and commitments.

Addiction treatment at Priory is underpinned by the renowned 12-step model, which is an abstinence-based approach that was first introduced by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

We provide an evidence-based programme that is tailored to individual needs, all structured within National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. Our leading addiction treatment programmes consist of:

  • Free, no obligation addiction assessment
  • 7 to 10-day medically assisted detoxification for drug and alcohol addictions, if this is needed
  • Individual 1:1 therapy, online therapy and structured group therapy programmes
  • Family and couples programmes
  • Access to both on and off-site 12-step support groups
  • Free aftercare for 12 months following treatment
  • Free family support for 12 months following treatment

Day care and outpatient treatment

As well as our comprehensive inpatient offering, addiction treatment at Priory can also take the form of day care or outpatient therapy. These options can be used as a step-down in intensity for people who have completed a residential programme, or can also be used as an entry-point to therapy, depending on the nature of your addiction and the intensity of the support you need.

Therapy types

Therapy gives you dedicated time and space to talk through the difficulties you’ve experienced in your life and your current struggles. With the help of a trained therapist, you can learn to process and deal with problems in your life, develop coping strategies to overcome stresses in the future, and develop a more healthy, sustainable mindset that delivers positive mental health.

There are many types of therapy. The one that’s right for you will depend on your condition and other individual circumstances. Common types of therapy include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) focuses on how our thoughts and beliefs affect our behaviours and actions, developing coping skills so we can better deal with problems in our lives. Find out more about CBT for addictions.
  • Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is based on CBT, but focuses on how people can learn to understand and accept themselves to reduce dysfunctional and distressing emotions.

Therapy can come in one of a few formats. It can be done on a one-to-one basis, with your family and friends or as part of a group with other people who are in recovery.
