At Priory, we offer world-class treatment for all types of substance addictions (such as drug addiction and alcohol addiction) as well as behavioural addictions (such as shopping, internet use and gambling).

Our addiction treatment programmes at Priory have been designed to meet the needs of each individual. Our expert care teams are dedicated to placing you at the centre of your addiction treatment, helping you to get back on track.

Understanding Priory's addiction treatment process

To help you take the first step towards recovery, we offer a free, confidential addiction assessment with one of our experienced specialists. This gives you the opportunity to talk openly about your concerns, explore how addiction may be affecting your life and receive guidance on the most appropriate next steps. The assessment helps us understand your individual needs so we can recommend the right level of support – whether that’s detox, inpatient treatment, structured therapy or a more flexible treatment plan.

Assessments typically last around 90 minutes and can be carried out either in person or over the phone.

At Priory, we offer a wide range of addiction treatment services, delivered by expert teams across our UK network of treatment centres. We also offer online options for people who need more flexible access to support. Each programme is tailored to your personal circumstances and can be adjusted to provide the right intensity and duration of care for your recovery.

Treatment options at Priory include:

Medically assisted detoxification

If you're struggling with an alcohol or drug addiction, we offer a medically assisted detoxification for your addiction, which typically takes place over 7 to 10 days.

Detox takes place on an inpatient basis, where medical professionals can offer round-the-clock care, helping you to manage your withdrawal symptoms. We can also use carefully controlled medication to limit your withdrawal symptoms and to stabilise your physical health.

Following detox, you'll be physically stable and ready to move on to the next stage of your treatment. This could include intensive inpatient treatment, one-to-one therapy, online support or other tailored interventions designed to support long-term recovery.

Inpatient treatment

Inpatient treatment is when you stay in hospital for the duration of your treatment programme. Inpatient treatment is the most intensive form of support you can receive, ensuring you have 24-hour care, much-needed structure and a break from your everyday life and triggers.

For our addiction inpatients, treatment involves a 28-day stay in hospital to allow for specific therapeutic approaches to take place, such as medically assisted detoxification (detox).

Our leading addiction treatment programmes consist of:

  • Free, no obligation addiction assessment
  • 7 to 10-day medically assisted detoxification for drug and alcohol addictions, if this is needed
  • Individual 1:1 therapy, online therapy and structured group therapy programmes
  • Family and couples programmes
  • Access to both on and off-site 12-step support groups
  • Free aftercare for 12 months following treatment
  • Free family support for 12 months following treatment

Other treatment options

We offer a range of non-residential treatment options designed to support different levels of need and fit around your lifestyle. Day care provides structured therapeutic input over a set number of days each week, offering regular support without the need to stay overnight. Outpatient therapy involves shorter, scheduled sessions - usually once a week - which can be delivered either face-to-face or online, depending on what works best for you.

We also offer digital support options, including access to online therapy and self-guided resources, which can help you stay engaged in your recovery wherever you are. These flexible approaches are particularly helpful if you're balancing treatment with other responsibilities, such as work, study, or family life.

All of our treatment options are guided by clinical need and tailored to your individual circumstances. Your free addiction assessment will help us understand your situation and recommend the level of support that’s right for you.

Therapy types and wellness activities

Therapy for addiction can take place on an individual, family or group basis, helping you understand and deal with the issues that have led to your addiction. It also helps you to develop coping strategies for dealing with any triggers in the future.

At Priory, we provide an evidence-based programme that's tailored to individual needs. Our specialists use a whole range of tried and tested therapeutic methods to help you with your addiction.

There are many types of therapy. The one that’s right for you will depend on your condition and other individual circumstances. Common types of therapy include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) focuses on how our thoughts and beliefs affect our behaviours and actions, developing coping skills so we can better deal with problems in our lives. Find out more about CBT for addictions
  • Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is based on CBT, but focuses on how people can learn to understand and accept themselves to reduce dysfunctional and distressing emotions

Therapy can come in one of a few formats. It can be done on a one-to-one basis, with your family and friends or as part of a group with other people who are in recovery.

Wellbeing activities

If you're staying with us on a residential basis, you may also take part in a range of wellbeing activities designed to support your recovery and enhance your overall sense of balance. These can include yoga, meditation, exercise classes and massage therapies – all aimed at promoting health in mind, body and spirit.

For those not staying with us, we can offer guidance on simple wellbeing practices you can do at home to support your recovery, helping you build healthy routines and self-care habits that work for your lifestyle.

You might also engage in a range of wellness activities. These include things like:

Gardening groups
Exercise classes and groups
Meditation and relaxation classes
Yoga, Tai Chi and Shiatsu classes
Guided walks
Recreational quizzes and movie nights

FAQs

Discover some commonly asked questions about private addiction treatment.

How do I know if I need addiction treatment?

Addictions typically have a negative effect on your quality of life. For example, you may find that your relationships are suffering, or that you're struggling to maintain your professional life.

Common signs you might be struggling with an addition include secretive or dishonest behaviour, withdrawing from responsibilities, not wanting to socialise, mood swings, low self-esteem and self-worth, sleeping too much or not getting enough sleep, and becoming more prone to illnesses.

What can I expect during the free addiction assessment?

During your free addiction assessment with one of our specialists, you'll have the opportunity to talk through your experiences, discuss the challenges you're facing, and ask any questions about Priory’s treatment options. This conversation helps us understand your individual needs so we can recommend the most appropriate addiction service for you. Assessments are often carried out remotely for your convenience.

Your specialist will also outline our confidentiality and safeguarding practices, ensuring you feel informed and supported from the start. If you're considering inpatient treatment, they’ll talk you through the admissions process and what to expect.

Is the treatment programme confidential?

At Priory, we're dedicated to providing you with the privacy you need to make a full and sustainable recovery. Our treatment programmes are confidential, except in circumstances where we believe you may pose a risk to yourself or others.

How long does the treatment programme last?

The length of addiction treatment at Priory varies depending on your individual needs and circumstances. We offer a range of options – from structured inpatient stays to shorter detox programmes and ongoing outpatient therapy that can continue for as long as needed. During your free addiction assessment, we’ll help you explore these options and identify the most appropriate treatment pathway for you.

What kind of aftercare and support is available after completing the treatment programme?

Many of our addiction treatment services include 12 months of free aftercare to support your ongoing recovery. This may involve continued access to therapy and support groups, family support sessions, help with your continuing care plan, and alumni events where you can connect with others on a similar journey.

How much does the treatment cost and is insurance accepted?

The cost of addiction treatment at Priory varies depending on the type of service you receive and the location it’s delivered. We offer a range of options to suit different needs, and pricing is based on the level and duration of support required.

You can choose to self-fund your treatment, or you may be able to use private medical insurance (PMI). Many of our services are covered by insurance, but what’s included will depend on your individual policy. We recommend checking with your insurer, or contacting our team – we’ll be happy to guide you through your options.

Are there any free rehab services?

Priory offers private addiction services, but there are other free services available either through the NHS or charity organisations. Speak to your GP about what is available, or refer to Mind’s list of support organisations for drug and alcohol addiction. Bear in mind that some of these services will have significantly longer waiting times than those available at Priory.

Are family members involved in the treatment process?

Family support is built into many of our treatment services, recognising the important role loved ones can play in the recovery journey.

These sessions offer a safe, therapeutic space for families to better understand addiction and its impact. They provide an opportunity to explore underlying issues, acknowledge and express feelings, and work together to rebuild trust and develop healthy ways of supporting long-term recovery.
