Signs you’re drinking too much alcohol

Unhealthy drinking habits can put your health, relationships and work life at risk. If you're concerned about your alcohol consumption, or you're worried about someone else, there are some signs to look out for if you're drinking too much

Some of these signs include drinking heavily alone, becoming secretive about your drinking, or your work and home life are being negatively affected due to drinking.

Continuing to drink too much alcohol can result in various side effects that can put your physical health, mental health and lifestyle at risk.

Free addiction assessment at your nearest hospital

To ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible on your journey to recovery, we offer a free addiction assessment with one of our alcohol and drug rehab experts. The assessment allows you to discuss your concerns in confidence, receive guidance on the next steps in the addiction treatment process, and begin to develop an understanding of the journey that you will be taking towards rehabilitation and recovery.

You will also undergo a consultation with a consultant psychiatrist, who will gather information on your medical and psychiatric history and advise on future treatment. We are also able to offer a comprehensive medically assisted withdrawal detoxification process for your addiction, if this is required.

Assessments can be done over the phone or in person, and usually last for approximately 90 minutes.

Our dedicated free assessment guide offers in depth information on what can be expected if you seek support for an addiction with Priory.

Inpatient addiction treatment at Priory

Our addiction treatment programmes typically take place as part of a 28-day residential programme, although the length of treatment can be flexible according to your unique needs, requirements and commitments. Addiction treatment at Priory is underpinned by the renowned 12-Step model, which is an abstinence-based approach that was first popularised by the organisation Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The 12-Step model provides a set of guiding principles for the addiction treatment journey, and focuses on your motivation to change your unhealthy thought patterns and addictive behaviours, whilst also drawing upon elements of spirituality within the treatment and recovery process.

When checking into a rehabinitial treatment involves detoxification, focusing on managing and alleviating any physical symptoms associated with your addiction, if required. Following this detox process, our structured program transitions into intensive group and individual therapy, designed to explore and address the underlying causes and triggers of your addictive behaviors.

We provide an evidence-based programme that is tailored to individual needs, all structured within NICE guidelines. Our leading addiction treatment programmes consist of:

  • Free, no obligation addiction assessment
  • 7 - 10 day medically assisted withdrawal detoxification for drug and alcohol addictions, if this is required
  • Individual 1:1 therapy, online therapy and structured group therapy programmes
  • Family and couples programmes
  • Access to both on and off-site 12-Step support groups
  • Free aftercare for 12 months following treatment (aftercare is provided for life following treatment at Priory Hospital Roehampton)
  • Free family support for 12 months following treatment (family support is provided for life following treatment at Priory Hospital Roehampton)

In addition to our comprehensive inpatient offering, addiction treatment at Priory can also take the form of day care or outpatient therapy. These options can be used as a step-down in intensity for individuals who have completed a rigorous residential programme, or can also be used as an entry-point to therapy, depending on the nature of your addiction and the intensity of the support that you require. For more information on Priory’s leading addiction treatment, as well as the type and format of the addiction therapy that we can offer, please visit our approach to addiction treatment page.

Without treatment, addictions can become worse over time and have an impact on your relationships with others, performance at work, physical and psychological health, and the way you think, act and feel on a daily basis. It's important to seek support as soon as you can because the long term effects of alcohol on your body, as well as substances and behaviours, can be detrimental.
