Understanding the cost of rehab

Going to rehab can be a life-changing decision – but understanding how much it costs, and what’s included, can feel overwhelming at first.

When we talk about ‘rehab’, we’re referring to the treatment itself; a structured programme of therapy, medical care and support designed to help people overcome addiction and build lasting recovery. The cost of rehab doesn’t just reflect the setting where it takes place, but also the type and intensity of treatment.

Rehab costs in the UK can vary widely. Factors that play a part include:

  • The type of programme (inpatient, residential, outpatient or online)
  • The length of treatment
  • The level of clinical support
  • Whether a medically assisted detox is needed

At Priory, we believe in transparency and clarity from the very beginning. We offer a range of private rehab options designed to suit different needs and budgets, with the reassurance that all our programmes are built on evidence-based, whole-person care delivered by experienced specialists.

This guide will outline what you can typically expect to pay for different forms of rehab, what influences the overall cost and what’s included – so you can make an informed choice and take the first step towards recovery.

Priory’s addiction treatment programmes and prices

At Priory, we offer a range of programmes designed to meet different needs, lifestyles and levels of support. Each programme is shaped around whole-person care, with attention to your physical wellbeing, emotional needs and longer-term recovery goals.

We’ll always be clear about what each programme includes – such as detox, therapy or ongoing aftercare – so you know exactly what to expect before you begin. Costs may vary slightly depending on the location where you receive treatment, and we’ll discuss this with you openly so you can make an informed decision.

What affects the cost of rehab?

The cost of rehab can vary depending on your individual needs and the type of treatment that’s most appropriate for you. Some of the main factors that influence price include:

  • Type of addiction and treatment needed – costs can differ depending on whether you need a medically supervised detox (for example, for alcohol or drug withdrawal) or therapy-only support for an addiction
  • Setting – residential and inpatient programmes generally include 24-hour support, accommodation and meals, while outpatient or online options tend to be lower cost and flexible
  • Length of stay or programme duration – shorter stays or brief therapy programmes usually cost less than longer, more intensive treatment plans
  • Level of medical or psychiatric care provided – the involvement of consultant psychiatrists, doctors and nursing teams can affect cost, particularly for people with co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Accommodation and facilities – private bedrooms, therapeutic amenities, and comfortable communal areas all contribute to the total cost of inpatient treatment
  • Aftercare and ongoing support – many programmes include aftercare or continued therapy after discharge, offering valuable long-term support as part of the package

These factors mean that rehab can be tailored to suit different levels of need and budget. At Priory, our team will guide you through the options available, helping you find a programme that offers the right balance of care, comfort and value.

What’s included in the cost of rehab?

When you pay for rehab, you’re paying for a structured, safe and supportive treatment experience that’s designed to help you recover and move forward with confidence.

While the exact inclusions vary depending on the programme type, the core elements usually include:

  • An initial assessment – before treatment begins, you’ll meet with specialists who’ll build an understanding of your needs, history and goals. This helps shape a plan that’s safe and appropriate for you
  • Care from experienced specialists – treatment is delivered by professionals such as psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, therapists and recovery practitioners. You’re paying for their expertise, guidance and ongoing support throughout your stay or programme
  • Accommodation and meals (for inpatient or residential programmes) – if you’re staying with us, your accommodation and meals are included. This provides a stable environment where you can focus fully on recovery without everyday pressures
  • Medically supported detox (if required) – for people who need detox, this involves round-the-clock medical monitoring to manage withdrawal safely and as comfortably as possible
  • Daily therapy and recovery activities – many programmes include a combination of group therapy, one-to-one sessions, educational workshops and reflective activities. These help you understand your relationship with substances or behaviours, develop coping strategies and build confidence
  • Aftercare and relapse prevention support – after you leave treatment, ongoing support may be available to help you maintain progress. Some programmes include 12 months of free aftercare, which offers a continued space to check in, review coping strategies and stay connected

Is rehab worth the cost?

Rehab can feel like a significant financial commitment, and it’s completely natural to question whether it’s worth it. For many people, rehab is an investment in long-term stability, health and a future that feels more in their control.

Trying to stop alone can be difficult and, in some cases, unsafe. A medically supported detox helps you withdraw from substances as comfortably and safely as possible. Structured therapy, whether inpatient, residential or online, offers space to explore underlying causes, strengthen resilience and rebuild confidence.

Rehab also provides support with emotional wellbeing, relationships, self-esteem and practical routines that help recovery last. While no approach can guarantee a specific outcome, many people find that professional support gives them a stronger chance of long-term recovery than managing alone.

If you’d like to hear real stories from people who have been through treatment, Priory’s ‘Live your life’ shares personal accounts of recovery, progress and hope.

Free and lower-cost rehab options

Not everyone will need or choose private rehab, and there are other routes to support that may be more suitable depending on your circumstances.

  • NHS-funded services – your GP is often the first point of contact if you’re looking for free addiction support. They can refer you to local NHS drug and alcohol services, which may include counselling, harm reduction support, community detox programmes and, in some cases, access to residential treatment. It’s worth being aware that waiting lists can vary depending on where you live
  • Charitable and community organisations – there are many charities and local support services offering free or low-cost help. These may include structured day programmes, housing support, recovery coaching or mutual aid groups. Examples include Turning Point, Change Grow Live (CGL) and local authority drug and alcohol services
  • Self-help and peer support groups – peer groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and SMART Recovery are free to attend and run across the UK, including online. They offer regular meetings, a sense of shared understanding, and ongoing encouragement from people who have faced similar challenges. Many people continue attending these groups alongside or after formal treatment

Our aim is to help you find the support that is right for you, whether that’s with Priory or elsewhere. If private rehab isn’t the best fit, we’ll always direct people towards alternative services that may be more suitable for their situation.

How to get help or find out more
