If you or someone you care about is experiencing symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), getting the right assessment is the first step towards understanding those symptoms and accessing appropriate support.

At Priory, our experienced consultant psychiatrists provide comprehensive ADHD assessments for adults and children. Every assessment is carried out by a psychiatrist with expertise in ADHD diagnosis, giving you confidence that you're receiving specialist-led care throughout your journey.

Before booking a full ADHD assessment

Not everyone experiencing symptoms of ADHD will need a full diagnostic assessment. That's why at Priory, we ask everyone to complete a digital ADHD screening assessment first to assess your suitability.

The screening helps our clinicians understand whether a full ADHD assessment is likely to be appropriate, helping you to avoid paying for a full assessment unless it's clinically recommended.

What happens during an ADHD assessment?

Every ADHD assessment at Priory is tailored to the individual. While the process is similar for adults and children, the information gathered and people involved will differ depending on age and circumstances.

1. Complete your digital ADHD screening assessment

The assessment journey begins with a digital ADHD screening assessment to help determine whether a full ADHD assessment is appropriate.

For adults:

You will complete an online questionnaire, including the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), alongside additional mental health screening questionnaires. These help us to understand your symptoms, experiences and overall mental health.

For children and young people:

Parents or carers will complete questionnaires for all children. Young people aged 13 and over may also complete their own questionnaire. The screening includes the SNAP ADHD questionnaire, alongside additional questionnaires where appropriate.

Please complete the questionnaires as fully as possible, as this information helps our clinicians recommend the most appropriate next step.

2. Screening review and assessment planning

Once your screening has been reviewed, our clinicians will determine whether a full ADHD assessment is recommended.

For adults:

If a full assessment is appropriate, we will arrange an appointment with a consultant psychiatrist specialising in ADHD. You can choose either an online appointment via secure video consultation or a face-to-face assessment at a Priory location.

For children and young people:

If the screening indicates that a full assessment is appropriate, we will arrange an appointment with a consultant psychiatrist experienced in assessing children and young people. Assessments may take place online or in person. In some cases, your psychiatrist may recommend a face-to-face appointment depending on your child’s individual needs and the information provided.

3. Gathering additional information

Before your assessment, your psychiatrist may ask for further information to help build a complete understanding of symptoms and how they affect everyday life.

For adults:

Your psychiatrist may explore your current symptoms, childhood experiences and how ADHD symptoms affect areas such as work, relationships and daily functioning.

For children and young people:

This may include questionnaires completed by parents, carers and school or teachers, helping your psychiatrist understand how symptoms present across different settings.

4. Your psychiatrist assessment

During your appointment, your consultant psychiatrist will ask structured questions about your symptoms and experiences.

This may include:

  • Attention and concentration
  • Hyperactivity and restlessness
  • Impulsivity
  • Emotional regulation
  • Daily functioning and relationships
  • The impact symptoms have on everyday life

For adults:

Your psychiatrist will also explore whether symptoms were present during childhood, as this forms an important part of an ADHD diagnosis.

For children and young people:

The assessment will be adapted to your child’s age and development. Parents or carers will be invited to contribute information throughout the assessment.

5. Your assessment appointment

Your assessment will usually last up to 90 minutes and may take place over one or two appointments depending on your individual needs.

6. Your assessment report

Following your assessment, your psychiatrist will prepare a comprehensive diagnostic report. Most people receive their report within four weeks of their assessment appointment, with diagnosis typically completed within four to six weeks from starting the assessment process.

7. Discussing treatment and support options

If ADHD is diagnosed, your psychiatrist will discuss the next steps with you, including treatment options and any additional support that may help.
