Reclaiming confidence: cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) in Birmingham

Page last updated:

When diagnosed with mild-to-moderate dementia, or after experiencing noticeable cognitive decline, it can feel as though a piece of your independence is slipping away. The frustration of "brain fog," memory gaps, or struggling to find the right words can cause people to quietly withdraw from social life.

Just as physical therapy helps rebuild and maintain bodily strength, structured mental exercise is an effective way to keep the mind active, engaged, and resilient.

At Priory Woodbourne, our structured 8-week cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) course offers a supportive, face-to-face group environment designed to stimulate the mind, lift the fog, and restore a sense of personal control.

What is cognitive stimulation therapy (CST)?

Cognitive stimulation therapy is a clinically proven, non-pharmacological treatment recommended for people experiencing mild-to-moderate memory difficulties or early-stage dementia.

Rather than focusing on what has been lost, CST looks firmly at what remains. It involves exercises that work on executive functioning, language, and memory recall through enjoyable, real-world activities.

The value of CST comes from its supportive group dynamic. By sharing these structured exercises with peers who are navigating the exact same challenges, the anxiety of making a mistake disappears. It creates a safe space where participants can laugh, share stories, and rebuild their social confidence.

Inside the 8-week programme: how It works

Our course runs over eight consecutive weeks, with each face-to-face session lasting 1.5 hours. Led by highly trained specialists, every session adopts a deeply person-centred approach designed to build trust and calm anxiety.

The programme actively stimulates different areas of the brain through a variety of evidence-based focus areas:

  • Managing anxiety and brain fog: We teach practical mindfulness and breathing exercises alongside tactile focus tools (such as jigsaw puzzles, stress balls, and painting accompanied by relaxing music) tailored entirely to what makes each participant feel most at ease
  • Enhancing emotional expression: We introduce specialised communication tools, like expression face cards, to help participants articulate complex feelings that words might currently fail to capture
  • The power of reminiscence: In our nostalgic sessions, participants are encouraged to bring in cherished personal items such as family photographs, certificates of achievement, or tokens from their garden or pets. This exercise acts as a powerful anchor, reinforcing their enduring sense of identity and personal achievement
  • Memory recall and cognitive games: We utilise familiar number games, dominoes, and classic board games like Monopoly to aid number recall, alongside analysing vintage newspapers and magazines to stimulate reading practice and long-term memory
  • Exploring new and existing hobbies: From knitting to crosswords, we encourage participants to engage with familiar passions or spark new interests that keep the brain active.
The goal of the group is to promote cognition, independence and wellbeing, while also reducing social isolation

Bringing the therapy home

A vital component of our CST programme is translation. We don't want the benefits to stop when the session ends. Our therapists work closely with participants to turn these group activities into sustainable daily routines and skills they can confidently practice at home. This structure helps individuals maintain a greater sense of control over their daily lives for as long as possible.

Is the course the right fit?

This group is specially designed to provide personalised attention to individuals navigating the early-to-moderate stages of cognitive difficulties for at least 6 months.

To foster a consistent, high-trust environment where participants feel comfortable opening up, this is a closed group. Attendees sign up for the full 8-week duration from start to finish; drop-ins or casual sessions are not permitted.

Please note that this specific programme is not suitable for those at an advanced stage of dementia. If you or your loved one require more specialized or intensive dementia care, please reach out so our team can guide you toward our alternative support pathways.
