Depression therapy group in Birmingham

Page last updated:

When you are living with depression, the world can feel like it is moving in slow motion. It can isolate you and prevent you from reaching out for the very help you need.

If you have found yourself trapped in a loop of negative thoughts, constant fatigue, or a total loss of interest in the things you used to love, it is important to know support is available and that you don’t have to be alone.

At Priory Woodbourne, our specialised 6-week ‘overcoming depression course’ is designed to break this cycle. By blending evidence-based therapeutic strategies with the unique power of a shared group environment, we help you transition from simply surviving each day to building a meaningful life.

Choosing group therapy for depression

Recovery requires understanding the underlying mechanics of your depression symptoms. Our course is structured explicitly around the 80/20 rule of sustainable mental health: within a group setting, we provide the core psychological education you need, combined with practical, daily tools that fit into real life.

Our group sessions provide a safe, trusting, and confidential environment where you can:

  • Realise you are not alone: Gain strength and comfort from a community experiencing similar challenges
  • Build mutual trust: Sessions are paced to allow you to get to know your peers comfortably
  • Learn from diverse experiences: Develop greater self-awareness by hearing how others manage their symptoms

It’s normal to find the idea of group therapy daunting at first. However, evidence shows that sharing your journey with peers who truly understand what you are going through is incredibly powerful.

Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to share your experiences and learn from others in a supportive, safe and trusting environment. This experience will help you to develop greater self-awareness and understanding of your own personal challenges.

When you hear someone else say the thoughts you have been thinking, it reminds you that you are truly not alone in this experience.

To maintain a safe and consistent therapeutic environment, this is a closed group. This means attendees sign up for the full duration from start to finish and drop-ins are not permitted.

Depression therapy timetable

This 12-hour structured programme breaks down the recovery process into logical, manageable steps. Here is exactly what we cover, why it matters, and how it helps you rebuild.

SessionTopic
Session 1Understanding depression
Session 2Nutrition and nurturing
Session 3Understanding our own unique feelings, needs and wants
Session 4Understanding our own unique feelings, needs and wants
Session 5Rest and relaxation
Session 6Spirituality and exercise

Session 1: Deconstructing and understanding depression

In this initial session, we strip away the stigma and look at the actual psychology and physiology of depression. You will learn how your personal symptoms manifest and begin to identify the specific triggers that set off your downward spirals.

Session 2: The physical connection

Depression heavily affects the body, altering your sleep, energy levels, and appetite. This week focuses on the bi-directional relationship between physical self-care and mental well-being. We explore practical, low-barrier ways to nurture your physical body to give your brain the biological support it needs to heal.

Sessions 3 and 4: Unpacking feelings, needs, and wants

Over these two critical sessions, we deep-dive into emotional processing. You will learn how to identify your unique emotional needs, express your wants clearly, and set healthy boundaries with the people in your life—skills that are essential for long-term emotional resilience.

Session 5: Reclaiming rest and relaxation

Chronic stress and depression keep your nervous system in a constant state of low-grade alarm or complete burnout. This session introduces actionable, evidence-based relaxation techniques designed to lower your baseline anxiety, calm an overactive mind, and restore a sense of physical and mental peace.

Session 6: Holistic wellness and relapse prevention

Recovery isn't just about getting better; it's about staying better. In our final session, we explore holistic avenues of wellness, including the role of movement and finding a deeper sense of personal meaning or connection. You will walk away with a personalised, robust relapse prevention plan to maintain your progress long after the course ends.

Is this course right for me?

This course is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is currently experiencing depression.

Because this is a structured, group-based therapy environment, it is best suited for mild-to-moderate depression. It is not suitable for individuals managing a severe psychiatric disorder, acute risk of suicide, or significant substance misuse.

If you require more intensive or individualised support, please contact us so we can guide you toward our alternative, specialist treatment programmes.
