Managing exam anxiety: CBT-informed stress workshops

Page last updated:

Exam season often brings a significant amount of pressure, affecting sleep, concentration, and overall confidence. Whether you are a university student preparing for finals, a mature learner returning to education, or a parent supporting a teenager through their GCSEs or A-Levels, feeling overwhelmed during this period is entirely normal.

When anxiety begins to impair performance or impact daily life, proactive support can make a substantial difference.

At Priory Woodbourne, we offer structured, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-informed exam stress workshops for adults and young people.

Age groupSessionsDuration
Adults – 18+42 weeks
Young people – 15-1744 weeks

These evidence-based programmes are designed to help participants understand the underlying mechanics of stress, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and build practical coping mechanisms for the future.

Our supportive group experience focuses on:

  • Improved stress management
  • Building lifelong coping skills
  • Challenging negative thinking
  • Social support
  • Better exam preparation
  • Increased self-efficacy
  • Creating positive behavioural changes and a lasting impact

How a CBT approach helps manage exam stress

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that looks at the links between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Under exam pressure, it’s common to experience automatic negative thoughts like predicting failure. These thoughts naturally drive physical anxiety and can lead to unhelpful behaviours like avoidance or over-studying to the point of burnout.

Our exam stress workshops help participants break this cycle by providing:

  • Short-term relief techniques: Practical tools to lower acute anxiety and regain focus during study sessions or inside the exam hall
  • Long-term resilience strategies: Sustainable habits that build self-efficacy and confidence well beyond exam season
  • A supportive group dynamic: A safe space alongside peers facing similar academic pressures, which reduces the sense of isolation often experienced during intense study periods

What’s included in the programme? The 4-part workshop

Highly qualified Priory therapists who specialise in anxiety management lead our 4-part workshop. They’ll encourage you to share your experiences and learn from others in a supportive, safe and trusting environment. This experience will help you to develop greater self-awareness and understanding of your own personal challenges.

The topics covered in the workshop include:

  • Workshop 1: Psychoeducation on anxiety and stress
  • Workshop 2: Grounding techniques
  • Workshop 3: Worry management
  • Workshop 4: Relapse prevention and endings

Prior to starting the group workshops, you’ll also receive a 30-minute one-to-one session with a Priory therapist, to discuss your individual needs and goals. The workshops will take place online via Zoom.

Choosing the right workshop

We’ve created two formats to ensure that workshops take place with students who are all experiencing similar challenges.

1. The adult workshop (Ages 18+)

Designed for mature students looking to improve their coping mechanisms during key assessment periods.

  • Duration: A 2-week programme consisting of two 1-hour sessions each week
  • Timing: Hosted on weekdays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm to accommodate study or work schedules
  • Format: Delivered fully online via Zoom

2. The young person workshop (Ages 15–17)

Tailored for teenagers navigating the unique pressures of school or college exams.

  • Duration: A 4-week programme with one group session per week
  • Format: Available either face-to-face or online via Zoom, depending on local demand
  • Individual support: Includes two private, 30-minute one-to-one sessions with a therapist – one before the course begins to establish personal goals, and one at the conclusion of the course to reflect on progress and plan next steps
  • Parental involvement: Prior to joining the group, formal consent from a parent or guardian is required, followed by an initial triage assessment to ensure the programme is the right fit.

It’s normal to find the thought of group sessions to be quite daunting. However, we’ll ensure that you’re given enough time to get to know your peers and hear their experiences, allowing you to build a level of trust.

Participation in group sessions can helps you realise that they’re not alone while developing a sense of strength, closeness and support between group members.

Both groups are closed groups, meaning participants sign up from start to finish, ensuring a consistent, high-trust group environment where drop-ins are not permitted.

Suitability Criteria

To ensure these workshops remain a safe and effective space for short-term skills building, they are designed for people managing mild-to-moderate exam anxiety.

They are not suitable for those experiencing severe psychiatric disorders, acute risk of suicide, or significant substance misuse. Participants must also be able to comfortably tolerate and participate within a group setting of up to eight people without experiencing severe distress.

If you or your child require more intensive or individualised psychological care, please contact our team so we can assist you in exploring alternative, more appropriate support pathways.

Fees and enquiries

Both the adult and young person workshop streams are available on a self-pay basis.

Total course fee: £195 (Inclusive of all sessions, materials, and individual therapist consultations).
