Priory Group's comprehensive addiction services in London

Specialist addiction treatment in London

Addictions can have a negative impact on all areas of your life, affecting your ability to function on a day-to-day basis, as well as your relationships with others, your performance at work, and your general health and wellbeing.

However, the good news is that addictions are treatable. At Priory, we offer expert addiction treatment, therapy and rehab at our London-based hospitals and wellbeing centres, empowering you to address the underlying causes for your addiction and take steps towards a full and sustainable recovery.

We are able to treat a wide range of substance addictions at Priory, including alcohol and drug addictions (comprising ecstasy/MDMA, cocaine, cannabis, heroin and prescription drug addictions), as well as a whole host of behavioural addictions such as gambling, internet, love and sex and shopping addictions.

Here, we outline our specialist addiction services in London, and explore the complete addiction treatment journey that we offer to our patients.

Where can I receive addiction treatment in London?

We provide specialist addiction treatment at the following locations, in and around London:

We also offer high quality addiction treatment in the surrounding areas and the home counties, including Priory Hospital Chelmsford in Essex, Priory Hospital Hayes Grove in Kent, and Priory Hospital Woking and Life Works in Surrey.

Free addiction assessment at your nearest hospital

The first step in seeking help for your addiction is our free addiction assessment. This can take place at any of our London-based addiction treatment hospitals or at our Harley Street and Fenchurch Street wellbeing centres. The purpose of this initial assessment is to discuss your concerns and explore your suitability to start addiction treatment at Priory.

The free assessment provides you with the chance to:

  • Meet face-to-face with a member of our highly skilled addiction treatment team
  • Discuss the challenges you’re facing, as well as your individual concerns, needs and options
  • Explore the impact that your addiction is having on your life and the lives of your loved ones
  • Talk through your proposed addiction treatment plan, which will be personalised according to your individual needs
  • Ask any questions that you may have on the addiction treatment process

Addiction Treatment in London

Following your free assessment, it may be appropriate for you to start our 28-day Addiction Treatment Programme, where you stay at one of our hospitals in London on a residential basis. While 28 days is the recommended treatment length for addictions, we can consider flexible treatment lengths at some of our hospital sites, depending on your needs and commitments. As part of your addiction treatment, you will have the opportunity to tackle any physical symptoms that are associated with your addiction, via our detoxification (detox) process, before receiving intensive group and individual therapy in order to address the underlying causes and triggers for your addictive behaviours.

Addiction treatment at Priory is based on the well-known 12-Step model, which is an abstinence-based approach that was first introduced by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). This provides a set of guiding principles for the addiction treatment journey, and focuses on your motivation to change your unhealthy thought patterns and addictive behaviours, while also drawing on elements of spirituality within the treatment and recovery process.

Medically assisted withdrawal detoxification in London

If you’re struggling with an alcohol or drug addiction, an important step in the Addiction Treatment Programme may be for you to go through a medically assisted withdrawal detox process, before you move on to addiction therapy. Our London-based addiction detox programmes have been designed to ensure that this process is safe, thorough, and managed as smoothly and comfortably as possible for each patient, in our highly supportive and clinical environments. The goal of detox at Priory is to:

  • Remove all traces of harmful and addictive substances from your body
  • Reduce any physical withdrawal symptoms that you may experience when you no longer have alcohol or drugs in your system, by using controlled medication
  • Enable you to become physically stable

Following detox, we strongly recommend that our patients continue with our residential Addiction Treatment Programme in order to get their addiction fully under control.

Day care and outpatient addiction treatment in London

As well as intensive inpatient treatment, which takes place as part of our Addiction Treatment Programmes, addiction treatment at Priory can also take the form of day care or outpatient therapy.

Day care for addictions is usually used as a step-down in intensity once you have completed your 28-day inpatient treatment programme at one of our hospitals. It involves you attending a Priory hospital for a set number of days each week, depending on the intensity of the support that you need, and taking part in addiction therapy groups alongside current residential patients. However, unlike our inpatient programme, you will not stay at the hospital overnight and will return home following a day of therapy.

Outpatient treatment for addictions involves you attending hourly therapy sessions, usually on a weekly basis, with appointment times that can be flexible according to your existing commitments. Outpatient therapy can be delivered at our hospital sites as well as through our wellbeing centre network, which includes Priory Wellbeing Centres Harley Street and Fenchurch Street. Our wellbeing centres also offer a tailored outpatient therapy package for alcohol addiction in particular, which provides 12 one-to-one therapy sessions, certainty of price for initial treatment, discounted rates and a personalised treatment plan.

Therapy formats used in addiction treatment

Whether it takes place on an inpatient, day care or outpatient basis, we can deliver addiction therapy in a number of different formats at Priory. These include:

Therapeutic approaches used in addiction treatment

We also offer a wide range of specialist therapy types which can be delivered on an inpatient, day care or outpatient basis, and in different formats, depending on your personal needs. These include:

Expert London-based addiction treatment teams

Our expert teams of psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and other specialists consist of leaders in the field of addiction treatment and rehab. We are committed to remaining up to date with current research, in order to ensure that our practice is guided by the latest thinking in addiction treatment, and follows National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. Therefore, we are extremely well-placed to provide high quality treatment for a wide range of addictions and addictive behaviours, producing the most positive individual outcomes for each and every one of our patients.

In addition, it’s important to note that many of our addiction therapists are also in addiction recovery themselves. These individuals have gone through comprehensive addiction treatment and have chosen to qualify as addiction therapists post-treatment, in order to help others and share their insight. Our patients also receive valuable input from our network of peer supporters throughout their treatment journey. Again, Priory’s peer supporters are ex-patients who choose to return to the hospital and take part in addiction therapy groups, in order to offer inspiration, hope and guidance, and share their positive recovery experiences with current patients.

Our recovering therapists and peer supporters are able to offer a different perspective to our patients, allowing them to explore and challenge themselves in unique ways.

Environments suited to recovery

At Priory, we believe that the environment in which treatment takes place is just as important as the treatment programme itself for enabling you to make a strong and lasting recovery.

Our hospitals are set within beautiful and attractive buildings, and many also have extensive, private grounds where you can relax and unwind. During inpatient treatment at Priory, you will stay in a comfortable and beautifully decorated bedroom, complete with modern en-suite facilities, and you will also benefit from spacious, peaceful and welcoming living areas, providing a tranquil space for you to enjoy relaxing leisure time.

Diet and nutrition are an important part of our treatment approach at Priory, and each of our hospitals deliver high quality on-site catering, with dishes that are healthy, nutritious, and tailored to suit your individual dietary requirements.

Secondary care for addiction

Once you have gone through an intensive 28-day Addiction Treatment Programme, you may feel as though you would benefit from some ongoing support to help to build on the skills you’ve learnt, and to help you to live your life in recovery.

Our new Secondary Addiction Care Service is ideal for people who wish to continue their addiction treatment journey, or for those who have completed their primary addiction treatment with a third party (whether for substance or behavioural addictions), and who want to enter into secondary care with Priory Group.

Our Secondary Addiction Care Service at The Elphis, in Mill Hill, Barnet, has been set up to prepare you for a healthy and addiction-free future. The service will help with:

  • Reinforcing and building on the techniques learnt during your residential Addiction Treatment Programme, within a safe and comfortable environment
  • Ongoing therapy for your addiction as well as any co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Additional therapy to support any specific areas of concern e.g. trauma, relationship problems
  • A structured and gradual transition back into family living, to support both you and your family
  • Re-establishing your support network
  • Incorporating relapse prevention techniques into your daily life, and managing temptations
  • Re-building daily life skills, such as managing your finances
  • Developing a realistic ‘life plan’ to help set goals for the future

With the support of our expert therapy team and fellow clients, The Elphis provides you with the perfect opportunity to work towards your personal goals and embrace your life in recovery.

In addition, The Elphis clients will receive a year’s free aftercare which commences once you have been discharged. This includes access to therapy support groups once a week, to help you through your first full year in recovery. If you have previously completed your 28-day programme at a Priory hospital, you are welcome to continue with the hospital’s aftercare programme, if this is more convenient for you.

Comprehensive aftercare

At Priory, we are dedicated to your ongoing recovery, which is why we offer comprehensive aftercare support to each individual who completes their 28-day Addiction Treatment Programme with us. The majority of our hospitals offer free aftercare for 12 months following addiction treatment, and Priory Hospital Roehampton provides free aftercare for life.

Our exceptional aftercare programmes consist of ongoing access to support groups, continuous networking assistance, talks and advice for patients, as well as family support groups. In addition, each and every one of our patients will finish their Addiction Treatment Programme with a personalised Continuing Care Plan and we are dedicated to supporting you in your ongoing transition from hospital back to your day-to-day life.
