Dr Arokia Antonysamy (Dr Samy)

Dr Arokia Antonysamy (MBBS, MRCPsych, MSc) (known as Dr Samy) is the clinical lead for Mental Health at the National NHS benchmarking network, and consultant psychiatrist at Priory Hospital Hayes Grove and the Ministry of Defence, London. She trained in the UK in General Adult psychiatry, addictions and perinatal psychiatry. She completed her MRCPsych in 2006 and obtained a Masters degree in leadership and public health in 2010. She has been involved in a number of local and national projects.

She was involved in the development of a quality improvement toolkit for mental health, launched at the House of Commons in 2016. She has been involved with the RCPsych in the National Audit of Psychosis in 2017-18. Her main interests include leadership, quality improvement, patient outcomes and experience of care and building positive relationships.

Research interests

Dr Samy won the Rethink Academic Prize for her research project in 2008 at Manchester. She is the recipient of the ‘Innovator Award’ in 2010 for developing a tool to help monitor patients in hospital and the community. Her team’s efforts in improving patient outcomes in the psychiatric intensive care unit received national recognition when their approach was broadcast by the BBC in 2014. Her team introduced innovative patient centred approaches in the ward and was rated highly by patients and families. Her team was a finalist in the BMJ awards in 2014. She was one among the 25 national HSJ rising stars in 2015.
