Dr Catherine Rowlands
Visiting Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Dr Catherine Rowlands

Dr Catherine Rowlands has worked with the child and adolescent inpatient ward at Priory Chelmsford since 2016. She has recently started her own private clinic whilst maintaining important links with the inpatient ward. In her clinic she helps young people below the age of 18 who are requiring mental health assessment and treatment by a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She has strong links to highly qualified therapists at Priory Chelmsford so she can organise all therapies that might be required to help a young person recover.

Training

After graduating from Cambridge University with a BA in Natural Sciences, Dr Rowlands embarked on medical training at the St. Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine. She graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Medicine-Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree.

Dr Rowlands achieved Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) in 2013. She worked in the NHS in Essex initially, prior to moving to the Priory Group in 2016. She is a section 12 approved doctor and achieved Approved Clinician status in 2018, allowing her to manage the care of patients placed under a section of the Mental Health Act.

Research interests

During her training, Dr Rowlands was involved in recruiting suitable patients for a study called Decision Making in Adolescent Psychosis taking place at the Institute of Psychiatry. This was investigating the mechanisms of disturbed interpersonal trust and reciprocity in psychosis in adolescence.

Dr Rowlands is currently working on a case report about psychosis relating to the menstrual cycle, which she will submit for publication.

For me, working with children, adolescents and their families is a privilege. I always strive to provide excellent person-centred care based on current guidelines. I try to encourage young people to be part of their care and recovery, by maximising their involvement in appointments and answering any questions that they may have. I value feedback which helps me to continue developing my practice and ensuring that I am delivering high quality care.

The below feedback is from young people I have worked with:

"Dr Rowlands is caring and understanding and has a genuine interest in our care".

"Dr Rowlands is a very nice lady".

"She listens to me".

"Dr Rowlands, thank you for all of the work that you put in to get me where I am now".
