Dr Dipen Patel

Consultant Psychiatrist

About

Dr Patel is a consultant psychiatrist. He has extensive experience in the assessment and management of a range of mental health problems including depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, bipolar affective disorder, stress related conditions, psychotic disorders, and personality difficulties in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

He has a strong emphasis on a holistic approach to assessment and treatment, in order to gain the most comprehensive understanding of a person’s difficulties so that the treatments offered are most likely to be effective.

In his NHS role, he works as a consultant psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads a multidisciplinary team that provide long-term support to people with mental health problems in the outpatient and community setting. He works closely with GPs and other care professionals to ensure that his patients receive optimised care.

Dr Patel is a visiting consultant psychiatrist with Priory.

Training

Dr Patel completed his undergraduate medical training at King’s College London, and then his higher specialist training in general psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, London. This included training in sub-specialities in the inpatient and outpatient setting, addictions and psychiatry provision for people undergoing treatment for physical health conditions at Guy’s hospital.

Since 2020, alongside his clinical work, he has been leading on research which has focussed on improving physical health care in people with mental health problems through the application of new digital technologies, at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, at King’s College London. He was awarded an academic doctorate for contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge within his field, by King’s College London, in June 2025.

He currently holds the prestigious role of honorary senior clinical lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, at King’s College London. As part of this role, he contributes to the teaching of the undergraduate psychiatry curriculum, and examines students, at King’s College London Medical School.

He has authored a number of peer reviewed publications in respected medical journals. He is on the specialist register of the General Medical Council, and a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
