Dr Kai Wong

Chartered Counselling Psychologist

About

Dr Kai Wong is a chartered counselling psychologist with experience working with service users across the lifespan within NHS, third-sector and private organisations. Dr Wong draws on a range of therapeutic approaches including person-centred therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, EMDR and psychodynamic therapy, and has supported patients within primary, secondary and tertiary care services.

Committing to providing the best support to his patients, Kai has worked with individuals within the community, including providing therapy to patients presenting with depression and anxiety, homelessness and substance misuse difficulties. Whilst working in secure settings, Kai has experience working within adult acute wards and low-secure female wards. He also worked in a high security female prison within an offender personality disorder pathway, working with highly complex prisoners who were often viewed as stuck within the criminal justice system, to support their progression through the system.

Through working in a range of settings, Kai has developed the ability to support individuals facing a variety of challenges. Some of the presenting difficulties he has worked with include depression, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, substance misuse, suicidality, PTSD, CPTSD, loss of religion, low self-esteem, self-harm and psychosis. Due to his experience working with diverse populations and settings, Kai has developed the ability to work with patients facing difficulties adjusting to transient life challenges to chronic and enduring mental health disorders.

Position at Priory

Kai joined as an outpatient and day care psychologist in May 2025 and has been involved in a range of clinical duties to support the delivery of the day care programme. Kai is continuously involved in receiving and implementing service user feedback to ensure the delivery of high-quality psychological input in each pathway of the day care programme. Kai is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and holds chartered status (CPsychol) with the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Research interests

Kai has a particular interest in exploring the impacts of caregiving on mental health amongst young carers, having completed a qualitative doctoral thesis on the experiences of being a South-Asian young carer in the UK.

  • Professional doctorate in counselling psychology (PsychD) Thesis: "How do South-Asian Young Carers Experience Their Caregiving Roles in the UK? An IPA study".
